"We will fatigue and it’s not a sign of weakness to recognize that. It’s a sign of good-quality introspective abilities to know that you have now reached a point where your productivity has declined and you are more vulnerable for all of these types of interference where you’re just going through the motions of working."

"Level two is where many companies have found themselves in the past few weeks with the COVID-19 pandemic. They’ve accepted that work is going to happen at home for a while, but they recreate what they were doing in the office in a 'remote' setting, like Marshall McLuhan talked about new media mediums initially copying the generation before."

On the Distributed blog, Matt Mullenweg answers frequently asked questions about our hiring process.

"Q: When interviewing candidates, are there any tactics you recommend to better assess candidates’ fit with a distributed workforce?

A: At Automattic, one thing we try to do is set our expectations publicly so they are obvious. We stress our company-wide travel expectations (3-4 weeks a year), and highlight our benefits. We do this to add a layer of self-selection to the proce...ss. We also do trial projects, which last a few weeks and are incredibly valuable when making hiring assessments."

"Level four is when things go truly asynchronous. You evaluate people’s work on what they produce, not how or when they produce it. Trust emerges as the glue that holds the entire operation together. You begin shifting to better — perhaps slower, but more deliberate — decision-making, and you empower everyone, not just the loudest or most extroverted, to weigh in on major conversations."

🚨A new Distributed episode is out!🚨

The world has dramatically changed in the past several weeks — and we're all learning to navigate new environments, both at work and at home. Listen to a fascinating conversation between Matt Mullenweg and Science of People founder Vanessa Van Edwards on how to communicate with people — and build trust — during a time when Zoom and Slack are our primary tools for understanding each other.

Given the likely increase in written communication at your company over the past several weeks, here's a solid tip: "Assume positive intent for whatever message you receive." Most communication is nonverbal, so nuance and subtlety can be lost over our written messages.
