Centre for Innovation in Learning and Teaching (CILT)

About CILT

On 1 January 2014, the Centre for Educational Technology (CET) and the Higher and Adult Education Studies Development Unit (HAESDU) merged to form the Centre for Innovation in Learning and Teaching (CILT).  Watch the CILT video here.  CILT is located in the Centre for Higher Education Development (CHED). (HAESDU staff focused on the field of Adult Learning have joined the School of Education.)

The merger of the two units was agreed to be the best way to re-organize existing capacity and expertise within CHED to respond to teaching and learning challenges at UCT and in higher education in the areas of staff development, curriculum and course design, educational technologies, evaluation, research, and innovation in learning and teaching.

CILT staff are divided into three organizational units:

The Course and Curriculum Development team focuses on curriculum and course design for better teaching and learning outcomes, evolving models of provision (including blended and fully online delivery) and developing programme wide graduate outcomes. It supports UCT teaching grants programmes as well as the development of RPL, global citizenship attributes, digital literacies, post graduate literacies and open educational resources.

The Learning Technologies team develops and supports Vula, lecture recording and other online learning platforms and tools which are used campus-wide, and supports student digital literacy initiatives and programmes.

The Staff Development team provides professional development opportunities for UCT staff and senior students to develop in their roles as educators. This unit focuses on the design and delivery of specific academic staff development programmes and activities including NAPP, Teaching with Technology workshops and seminars and the annual UCT Teaching and Learning conference. It also delivers Postgraduate Diploma and Master’s programmes in Higher Education Studies and ICTs in Education.
