WARNING: ACTIVE COMMUNITY SANCTIONS

The article Syria, along with other articles relating to the Syrian Civil War and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, is currently subject to active community-authorised discretionary sanctions.

Limit of one revert per 24 hours restriction when reverting logged-in users on all pages related to the Syrian Civil War and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, broadly construed. When in doubt, assume it is related, and don't revert.

Editors who violate this restriction may be blocked or otherwise sanctioned without warning by any uninvolved administrator, even on a first offence.

Further information

After being notified of the sanctions, any editor who repeatedly or seriously fails to edit in accordance with the purpose of Wikipedia, the expected standards of behaviour, or any normal editorial process may be sanctioned by any uninvolved administrator. Sanctions may include blocks for up to one year, page bans, and topic bans.

Reports of editors violating any of these restrictions should be made to either the administrators' incidents noticeboard for general matters, or the edit warring noticeboard for breaches of the 1RR restriction.

Clear vandalism of whatever origin may be reverted without restriction. Reverts of edits made by anonymous IP editors that are not vandalism are exempt from 1RR but are subject to the usual rules on edit warring.

WARNING: ACTIVE ARBITRATION REMEDIES

The article Syria, along with other articles relating to the Arab–Israeli conflict, is currently subject to active arbitration remedies resulting from three arbitration cases (see WP:A/I/PIA). The current restrictions are:

Editing restrictions for new editors: All IP editors, accounts with fewer than 500 edits, and accounts with less than 30 days tenure are prohibited from editing any page that could be reasonably construed as being related to the Arab–Israeli conflict.
Limit of one revert in 24 hours: All articles related to the Arab–Israeli conflict, reasonably construed, are under WP:1RR (one revert per editor per article per 24-hour period). When in doubt, assume it is related.
All Arab–Israeli conflict-related pages, broadly interpreted, are subject to discretionary sanctions: Any uninvolved administrator may levy restrictions as an arbitration enforcement action on users editing in this topic area, after an initial notification.

The exceptions to the 500/30 restriction are:

Editors who are not eligible to be extended-confirmed may use the Talk: namespace to post constructive comments and make edit requests related to articles within the topic area, provided they are not disruptive. Talk pages where disruption occurs may be managed by any of the above methods. This exception does not apply to other internal project discussions such as AfDs, WikiProjects, noticeboard discussions, etc.
Editors who are not eligible to be extended-confirmed may not create new articles, but administrators may exercise discretion when deciding how to enforce this remedy on article creations. Deletion of new articles by editors who do not meet the criteria is permitted but not required.

With respect to the WP:1RR restriction:

Clear vandalism of whatever origin may be reverted without restriction. Reverts of edits made by anonymous (IP) editors that are not vandalism are exempt from the 1RR but are subject to the usual rules on edit warring.
Editors who violate this restriction may be blocked without warning by any uninvolved administrator, even on a first offence.

After being warned, discretionary sanctions can be used against any editor who repeatedly or seriously fails to adhere to the purpose of Wikipedia, any expected standards of behaviour, or any normal editorial process. Discretionary sanctions can include blocks, topic-bans, or other restrictions.
Reports of violations any of these restrictions should be made to the Arbitration enforcement noticeboard.

Relative size of Aleppo and Damascus[edit]

I noticed that this article and the articles List of cities in Syria, Aleppo and Damascus have conflicting information about relative size of these cities. I realise that it must be difficult to obtain the true figures, but it would be good if someone with a knowledge of the most reliable sources on the topic could update the four articles to reflect the same information, and/or add a footnote about the uncertainty. (I have just removed the reference to size in the introductory section of this article.) Laterthanyouthink (talk) 00:29, 27 November 2018 (UTC)

No Article about Moshe Maoz- a world recognized expert on Syria[edit]

Moshe Maoz as an Israeli SCholar is to my opinion perhaps the only one with minimum or almost no Zionist Bias about Syria. There is however an article on Mordechai Kedar who is deeply biased. Moshe Maos deserves an article, and now more than even for working on a summary of the uprising in Syria. The Hebrew Article is not so good and suffers of many problems as well. 84.111.208.168 (talk) 18:21, 30 December 2018 (UTC)

semi-presidential republic??[edit]

"The current constitution of Syria, adopted in 2012, effectively transformed the country into a semi-presidential republic due to the constitutional right for the election of individuals who do not form part of the National Progressive Front."
