This book serves as the beginning of a deep understanding of how powerful and influential foundations have become. The numbers are staggering. The number of foundations in this country is enormous. The assets they control are enormous. The people who run them are more powerful than politicians, journalists, etc.
The book is not political and does not make value judgments regarding the goals of foundations. Instead, it serves as a how-to manual. [It does not tell you how to acquire the money. You are on your own for that part.] The book explains the various goals and strategies for spending money so as to influence society. The book is filled with historic and recent examples.
If you read the book with a little cynicism, you can begin to understand the potential for abuse. The one drawback of this book is that it lacks any explanation of how foundations are abused and how politicians work hand-in-hand to use this tremendous power to create political and economic power. As far as figuring out how some of the foundations have pursued political goals and agendas for powerful people, the reader is on his own. But this book is a necessary beginning.
