If we have a good big download button on the home page to download mediawiki then that will be better. The link is OK. But If we can have a button then it is great.

AKlapper (WMF) (talkcontribs)

@Ranjithsiji: No I disagree. Most people do not come for "downloading". No problem is solved if you click a big download button and then cannot find what to do with that downloaded file.

Ranjithsiji (talkcontribs)

@AKlapper (WMF) I think the primary subject of this website is mediawiki. That is why I suggested this. I completely agree with you that most people may not here for downloading. But I think that the main subject of this website is to popularize or solve problems related to mediawiki. So in the first point download must be notable. One more the download button must not start the download instantly instead redirect it to the download and install instructions page.

I want to translate the Wikimedia home page into Persian. How should I do this?

AKlapper (WMF) (talkcontribs)

Other languages also at the top

Summary by Kghbln

De-duplicated. Thanks. :)

Kghbln (talkcontribs)

Somebody added the "Other languages" section to show also at the top of translated pages. Now it shows at the top and the bottom. I think it should be removed from the top since it is duplicated content and not very good for people who access via mobile devices.

Masumrezarock100 (talkcontribs)

Are you sure? Looks to me other languages section is only available at the bottom of the main page.

Kghbln (talkcontribs)

I am talking about the translated pages. And yes, it is also inconsistent to the source page, i.e. English Main Page.

AKlapper (WMF) (talkcontribs)
DannyS712 (talkcontribs)

Thanks for catching that

Masumrezarock100 (talkcontribs)

I trust that all translated versions of the main page have been fixed? If so, please close this topic.

Wording and style suggestions for frontpage

9
JCrespo (WMF) (talkcontribs)

I have some suggestions of minor changes to the frontpage:

https://www.mediawiki.org/w/index.php?title=User%3AJCrespo_%28WMF%29%2Fmain_page&type=revision&diff=3550799&oldid=3550760

Mine are not that great, and very open to discussion, but I think it improves a bit the searching of information (what I think is important can be certainly argued against, and I may be showing my biases, despite trying to think on "new users first"). As a problem I had, I tried to look for "how to start coding?" link and was unable to find it, despite knowing it was here.

CC @AKlapper (WMF).

AKlapper (WMF) (talkcontribs)

@JCrespo (WMF): Thanks! I can offer my feedback but note that I don't see myself as some gatekeeper or maintainer here. I agree with nearly all changes, except for the last one where I'm not sure if "How to start contributing to Wikimedia" is more guiding: My main intention might not be to "contribute" something, but to get hands on some code and find a project for that. ("Contribute" always felt vague to me as it can mean so many things - contribute food? thoughts? money? code?)

AKlapper (WMF) (talkcontribs)

(Oh wait, I realize that maybe editing that page requires some special permissions maybe?)

JCrespo (WMF) (talkcontribs)

> requires some special permissions maybe

Indeed it does, I cannot edit it directly.

> Choose a software project to hack on

That is confusing to me. I agree my suggestion is not ok either. I would be happy to have a better 3 option. Something in the vein of "Start coding <something>" or something that doesn't include "hack" (no problem for me with it, but I think its confusing for newcomers) and that is not "choose", something more explicit in a couple of words.

AKlapper (WMF) (talkcontribs)

@JCrespo (WMF) "Start working on the code of a project", maybe? (I don't dare currently to make the other edits because as usual, I don't understand all that <translate> markup, sigh.)

JCrespo (WMF) (talkcontribs)

"Start coding for a Wikimedia project"? (shorter)

Quiddity (WMF) (talkcontribs)

I've added the bolding and the link-label change.

However changing the 3 "Learn ..." links is much more complicated, because currently the existing translations are embedded within link-syntax, hence if we did something like this, then the previously translated text would end up without any links until a translator noticed the problem (in each language). [IIUC]. -- It's especially problematic here because the system doesn't seem to be rendering the pink-background color for outdated sections, as it's meant to.

AKlapper (WMF) (talkcontribs)

Thanks for your help, Quiddity! (And JCrespo for the improvements!)

JCrespo (WMF) (talkcontribs)

Thanks, I am happy as it is now! Thanks both!

How and where to request activation for WMF projects of the Jmol extension?

7
Griot Matteo (talkcontribs)

sorry, for practicality I created a new topic.

as the title suggests, much clearer than before, I would be interested in understanding how and where to request activation of the Jmol extension, existing on mediawiki, for wikipedia pages.

AKlapper (WMF) (talkcontribs)
Griot Matteo (talkcontribs)

once again, I'm sorry, unfortunately I'm new to the whole platform with regards to these things.

If I didn't understand it I would have to ask in the already opened tasks to see if you can already integrate the 3D visualization of jmol in the wikipedia pages, right?

I ask only because when I looked at mediawiki I found that the Jmol extension already exists (Extension:Jmol).

Sorry for all these questions but you are the only one available to explain things for a moment and give me useful links.

AKlapper (WMF) (talkcontribs)

There is no need to ask in opened tasks, as they are "open" (and not "resolved") for a reason: They are not resolved so you cannot already integrate the 3D visualization of jmol in Wikipedia pages. :)

I was not aware of https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Jmol , thanks for sharing that! See https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Review_queue for the steps required if you would like to see that Jmol extension available on Wikimedia websites such as Wikipedia.

Griot Matteo (talkcontribs)

I readen the page Review queue but I didn't found in any part of this how I can ask for see that Jmol extension avaiable on Wikipedia.

If I'm not mistaken, only the creator has the right to make those steps for the request.

what should I do then?

Thanks in advance

AKlapper (WMF) (talkcontribs)

You could contacts the authors / maintainers of that extension.

Griot Matteo (talkcontribs)

Thank you so much!

PhotographerTom (talkcontribs)

@Shirayuki - Thank you for all your work on this page. Could a link to the current stable version of the software, currently MediaWiki 1.33, be re-added to the page? Thank you!

AKlapper (WMF) (talkcontribs)

Hi, you can click on the first link in the first box ("Download"). I think the current situation makes sense.

PhotographerTom (talkcontribs)

What about adding a link to Release notes, either on the Main page or on the Download page?

AKlapper (WMF) (talkcontribs)

There already is a link to Release notes, on the Download page.

Griot Matteo (talkcontribs)

I was wondering if in the wikipedia pages related to chemistry, talking about orbitals, molecules and c ... we could add the 3D model of the subject of the page. I refer to integrating the jmol file / script into wikipedia pages to freely display a molecule, an orbital and so on in 3 dimensions. I think that such an addition could contribute positively in some cases to the encyclopedia. -⁓⁓⁓⁓

AKlapper (WMF) (talkcontribs)
Griot Matteo (talkcontribs)

hello, thank you for your reply.

from what I could read the project was no longer carried out, I hoped that Wikipedia had managed to implement it and make it available for all its pages ...

Malyacko (talkcontribs)

Please hide the header for translations

Kghbln (talkcontribs)

Now that the header cannot longer be translated, I used this to make the main page in German somewhat sane (also applies to all other languages), the header needs to be hidden via CSS. Currently the header e.g. says "Template:Main page/de" and I believe we cannot be serious about this.

Kghbln (talkcontribs)

This is much better. Not ideal but as good as before the switch to the new homepage layout and stuff. Thanks a lot.

Kghbln (talkcontribs)

Do not get me wrong, but the new image has issues. It is too dark, the people merge somehow with the background making it appear like an undifferentiated mass. Probably the top section needs to be cropped away and more brightness or so may help too.

BDavis (WMF) (talkcontribs)
Kghbln (talkcontribs)

Great, I personally believe this is much much better than the original version. Thanks a lot for working on this!
