When used with the "Redirect category shell" (Rcat shell) template:
This page is a redirect:
|
- Template {{Redirect category shell}} may be used to add one or more rcat templates, along with their parameters and categories, to a redirect. For more information see the documentation page below.
When used by itself:
- From historic name: This is a redirect from a title that is another name, a pseudonym, a nickname, or a synonym that, more than just a "former name", has a significant historic past. For example, this redirect title could be a name that appears in older references that has been taken over by a synonymous newer term. Or, it could be a region, state, principate's holding, city, city-state or such, and the subject has been subsumed into a modern era municipality, district or state, or otherwise has experienced a name change.
- This redirect leads to its target in accordance with the naming conventions for common names and can help writing. However, do not replace this type of redirected link with a piped link unless the page is updated for another reason.
This template is used on approximately 3,400 pages, so changes to it will be widely noticed. Please test any changes in the template's /sandbox or /testcases subpages, or in your own user subpage. Please consider discussing changes on the talk page before implementing them. |
If you plan to make breaking changes to this template, move it, or nominate it for deletion, please notify Twinkle's users and maintainers at Wikipedia talk:Twinkle as a courtesy, as this template is used in the standard installation of Twinkle. Thank you! |
This template should not be substituted nor used to tag soft redirects. |
Usage
- This redirect category (rcat) template populates Category:Redirects from historic names and, when added to a redirect in the main-article namespace (mainspace), it also sorts it to Category:Printworthy redirects by default. In 2003, efforts were begun to support the Wikimedia Foundation's goal of increasing access and availability of Wikipedia articles in printed versions. Mainspace redirects from historic names are suitable for a printed version. In other words they are printworthy.
- Add this rcat to a redirect in the following manner:
#REDIRECT [[(target page name)]] {{Rcat shell| {{R from historic name}} {{R printworthy}} }}
- Template {{Rcat shell}} is an alias for the Redirect category shell template, which may be used to add as many appropriate rcats as needed, usually from one to seven, along with their parameters, to a redirect. For more information see the documentation on its template page. This rcat may also tag a redirect individually:
#REDIRECT [[(target page name)]] {{R from historic name}}
- This is in accord with the instructions found at Wikipedia:REDCAT.
- Use this rcat to tag any redirect page that is considered a "historic" name for the target article. Do not use this template on redirects that are non-historic former names or just former working titles of the target article. If the name is an older title but not considered historic, then use {{R from former name}} instead.
- Examples:
- CalcuttaKolkata – the historic name for the capital of West Bengal in India was "Calcutta".
- ImmaterialismSubjective idealism – the historic name George Berkeley gave his metaphysical doctrine was "immaterialism".
- To tag a redirect that targets a page that is titled with a historic name, use {{R to historic name}} instead.
