The NCAA has ruled Memphis F/C James Wiseman -- the possible No. 1 overall pick in 2020 NBA Draft -- ineligible, his lawyers said in Memphis.
2018, not 2008. No small detail, I know.https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/1192937803002392578 …
Attorney Leslie Ballin told reporters that the NCAA has determined Memphis coach Penny Hardaway helped James Wiseman and his family move from Nashville to Memphis while in high school.
Ballin says this all stems from high school. The NCAA believes Hardaway helped Wiseman move to Memphis during that time and that made Penny a booster. Ballin is representing Wiseman and has filed a lawsuit challenging the ruling.
For context here: James Wiseman moved from Nashville (Tenn.) Ensworth to Memphis (Tenn.) East, where Penny coached, just before his junior season. Same spring/summer he began playing for Penny Hardaway's AAU program.

It’s official. The @NCAA is a damn travesty. This kid Wiseman is ineligible — after already starting the season — because COACH Penny Hardaway is a booster? This is straight B.S. no wonder @KingJames and so many others are so against the NCAA. Hey @NBA, I’ve got an idea:
The potential #1 pick in the NFL draft was suspended for accepting a loan - that he paid back in full - from a family friend. The potential #1 pick in the NBA draft was ruled ineligible because his coach helped his family move while in HS. Another banner day for the NCAA.
Is a donor automatically a booster or would one have to earmark his donation as being for sports to be a booster? Are the two synonymous? Legit asking so I can formulate my argument against my dad later.
Penny gave 1,000,000 to the university of Memphis to build his athletic building and so the ncaa considers him a donor in perpuituity. Probably spelled that wrong. That’s the last time penny donated to u of m
The bottom line: if Penny Hardaway did, in fact, give James Wiseman $11,500 to move it could be an extra benefit because, at the time, Penny could be considered a Memphis booster. That he's the coach now and so forth adds layers, but that's the crux of it.
A few things: (1) unfortunate situation for the young man, I can only feel for him; (2) there better be sufficient support for these allegations against Hardaway, would be very disappointing if not; and (3) will the media's reaction toward Hardaway mirror that of my father's?https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/1192937803002392578 …
For Coach Hardaway's sake I hope the reaction is different. Thinking about Coach Hardaway and wish nothing but best of luck to him! Situations like these make me wish I had my degree already and could help!
What a Friday for the joke that is the NCAA. Suspend the best player in college football (Chase Young) & now rule possible 2020 #1 NBA pick James Wiseman ineligible. Neither ruling makes any sense
I'm not trying to accuse Penny Hardaway of anything but he got the No. 1 overall player in James Wiseman Got Boogie Ellis, who signed with Duke to back out and go to Memphis, and got Precious Achiuwa, who I thought was a UNC lean
