Andrei Kartapolov was born on November 9, 1963 in the German Democratic Republic.
Graduated from the Moscow Higher Combined Arms Command School in 1985, Frunze Military Academy in 1993, and Military Academy of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces in 2007.
Served in the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany, Western group of forces and Far Eastern military district occupying post from platoon leader to division commander.
2007-2008 Deputy army commander in the Siberean military distrcit.
2008-2009 HQ Commander - First deputy army commander of the Moscow military district.
2009-2010 Branch Chief of the Main Operational Directorate of the Russian General Staff.
May, 2010 - January, 2012 Commander of the 58th army located in the North Caucasus MD, then Southern MD.
2012-2013 Deputy Commander of the Southern MD.
February, 2013 - June, 2014 Western MD HQ Commander.
June, 2014 - November, 2015 Chief of the Main Operational Directorate - Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces.
He served as the Commander of the Western Military District in the period from November 2015 to July 2018.
On July 2018, by Presidential decree he was appointed Chief of Main Directorate for Political-Military Affairs of the Russian Armed Forces.
Holder of the Order of Military Merits and other state medals.
