Help in updating my Wikipedia profile[edit]

Hi: Wikipedia has a brief entry on me https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dennis_Gruending but it is out of date and incomplete. A journalist friend of mine made some updating changes in the past but then someone had the old version reestablished. What is the best way for me to seek just a few changes that will update the entry and make it accurate.

1) The site says I have published five books but I have now published eight. For documentation and sourcing purposes, I am registered as an Amazon Author and all of the title are listed there: https://www.amazon.com/Dennis-Gruending/e/B001K7S0W2%3Fref=dbs_a_mng_rwt_scns_share

2) My university educational credentials are missing. I have both a BA in Arts and a Masters degree in Journalism. Again, the sources for that exist with the institutions in question: a) https://alumni.usask.ca/connect/classnotes.php; b) https://carleton.ca/sjc/profile/dennis-gruending/

3). The House of Commons link that you use as a reference for me takes the reader to a 19th century politician named The Hon. Gordon Minto Churchill, ie: https://lop.parl.ca/sites/ParlInfo/default/en_CA/People/Profile?personId=1772

4) There is no accompanying photo with the entry. I do have an up-to-date photo which I paid a professional photographer to take and am feree to use, with or without attribution.

My basic question is this: how to incorporate these changes. do you accept changes from the subject of an entry? Or do I have to provide the information to someone else who adds the new material?

Thanks, dennis gruending 70.48.113.14 (talk) 00:16, 8 May 2019 (UTC)

Welcome, Dennis. Since you are the subject of the Dennis Gruending article, you are strongly encouraged to avoid editing it directly yourself. Instead, Please place these suggestions on the article's talk page, together with the magical incantation {{request edit}}, and an editor without a WP:COI will come along and update the article as appropriate. However, such an editor will need to cite reliable sources (WP:RS), so it thanks for providing them. For the photo: We rigidly adhere to copyright law. The professional photographer holds the copyright, and "permission to use" is insufficient. We need for the copyright owner to grant a CC-BY-SA license. If the photographer transferred the copyright to you, then you can do this yourself. After you get an image file of a picture for which you own the copyright onto your computer, then come back here and ask for further help. -Arch dude (talk) 05:16, 8 May 2019 (UTC)
I've copied the request (and Arch dude's response to the talk page for the article) and will respond on that talk page, but I think I can pretty much do it all other than the photo (note, Gordon Minto Churchill is 1772, you are 1722 for the personID, that's how it happened)Naraht (talk) 16:04, 8 May 2019 (UTC)

Capitalization after slash in header[edit]

Yes.--Quisqualis (talk) 01:46, 8 May 2019 (UTC)

International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day[edit]

Hi-

I tried to make edits to the International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day page as the page needs to be updated. First, I don't know how to add in the title "Loss" and "Inter" on national as it's called International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day.

I can see the edits in the history section but not updated on the page- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Survivors_of_Suicide_Day. How long will these take?

Any questions, can view the program's page here: https://afsp.org/find-support/ive-lost-someone/survivor-day/.

Also, I was trying to add the new logo but keep receiving an error messages.

Thanks for your help. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Molliesmoth880 (talkcontribs) 01:31, 8 May 2019 (UTC)

Hi Molliesmoth880 - The article looks to be on two things, one the National Day, and the international day. I'd suggest if the name was to be changed, the article would need to be changed to fit. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 06:29, 8 May 2019 (UTC)
Hey Mollie,
  • You rename the article title by "moving" it. However, it's only available to autoconfirmed users, achieved by making 10 edits and have the account be 4 days old.
Your account doesn't meet the criteria yet; it's only 6 hours old, and you have made 3 edits so far (at the time of this writing).
  • That "error message" you get is due to an automated filter at Wikimedia Commons. It's a measure to make sure the uploads don't violate the Commons:Licensing policy.
Commons only accepts content that's under the public domain or freely licensed.
Remember to be aware of the five pillars when making edits to that article. theinstantmatrix (talk) 06:45, 8 May 2019 (UTC)

Hello all

I want to add 2 photos to this page:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taps

My ancestor is Horace Lorenzo Trim, and I'd like to add his photo as well as the original sheet music, published by him.

If you could help me, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks

Kelly — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:19A:27F:E018:BDAB:E804:5E30:15AD (talk) 01:32, 8 May 2019 (UTC)

There are multiple issues here. First, I think you need to find a reliable source (See WP:RS) that states that he wrote those lyrics, and cite that source in the article. Next it appears that there are several (possibly many?) poems for Taps, so it would be better to find sources that show that this particular poem was used at least somewhat extensively. OK, now for the images. fro teh sheet music, if it was published before 1924, then it is in the public domain and you can upload it to Commons (See the commons main page). This is also true for the photo if it was published, not merely taken, before 1924. If the photo was never published or published after 1924, the copyright belongs to the photograper or passed to whoever inherited the copyright (not the photo, the copyright). The copyright owner can upload the image to commons under a CC-BY-SA license. Wikipedia did not make these stupid laws, but we do try very hard to adhere to them.-Arch dude (talk) 03:46, 8 May 2019 (UTC)

Hello, when searching for the artist page LORD, the page shows up in a general search under entertainment Arts and Music. LORD is an artist from the United States.

When I attempt to create the page, I receive a message that that page does not exist, to prevent inaccurate information. I am employed by LORD, and this page has been taken over by someone in another country.

Please advise how to review and update this information. LORD is a streaming artist on Spotify, Apple iTunes, Amazon, and other major streaming platforms for music including YouTube. LORD also has her own website, and copyrighted materials associated with her name including 2 fully released albums. I've reviewed all of the online aid available, and have yet to receive any information regarding the creation of a new page that seemingly already exists.

The overview for American Hip Hop artist, LORD is inaccurate, and it is difficult to determine what is actually on the page, however the link here will show you what the page says.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:New_user_landing_page&page=LORD+%28Artist%29

Thanks in advance for your assistance and feedback regarding this urgent matter. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Oh13LORD (talkcontribs) 03:55, 8 May 2019 (UTC)

Please create an account. You cannot create an article yourself without an account. You must declare your paid status: see WP:PAID. You may create a draft article and ask that it be reviewed: See WP:YFA. Is this LORD notable by our definition WP:N? If not, your article will not remain on Wikipedia, period. When a name refers to separate subjects, we use a technique called "disambiguation", so two different LORDs will have two different articles with different names, e.g. "LORD (hip-hop artist)" and "LORD (heavy metal band)". -Arch dude (talk) 04:39, 8 May 2019 (UTC)

Verify translation[edit]

I have two cross-wiki article titles for the civil rights movement that I think may be incorrect. They are:

  • Սևամորթների իրավունքների համար պայքար (Armenian)
  • Ìrìnkánkán àwọn Ẹ̀tọ́ Aráàlú ọmọ Áfríkà Amẹ́ríkà (1955–1968) (Yoruba)

Is there a way for someone knowledgeable in those languages to verify they are correct? Mitchumch (talk) 07:49, 8 May 2019 (UTC)

They are both correct, I mean the interwiki links. They are not translation of the English article, all Wikipedias develop their own articles independently, so it will not make sense to be comparing articles from other languages to see whether they're correct translations of the one in English. – Ammarpad (talk) 08:11, 8 May 2019 (UTC)
Google translate gave me "Fight for Black Eyed Peas' Rights" (Armenian) and "United States African Footballer of the Year (1955-1968)" (Yoruba). How did you determine they're correct? Mitchumch (talk) 08:18, 8 May 2019 (UTC)
You should not be relying on Google translate to compare titles of article. I know they're correct because I am not using Google translate. – Ammarpad (talk) 08:22, 8 May 2019 (UTC)
Good to always have to hand one's Yoruba and Armenian dictionaries.--Quisqualis (talk) 08:31, 8 May 2019 (UTC)
@Mitchumch: Google Translate tries to use the context of words. This is often good but sometimes gives worse results. Translating the Armenian title one word at a time by placing the words on separate lines gives "Black rights for battle". Translating the Yoruba title without the years gives "The United States's Commonwealth Rights". The years are from a former English title African-American civil rights movement (1954–1968). Not spamming[edit]

Hello! I have added some further references to some British-Jewish theatre playwrights. The links reference the individual playwright's entry at the online database and joint research project (Technical University of Brunswick and Hebrew University, Jerusalem) on Contemporary British-Jewish Theatre. I received a warning that my links are considered as spam. I was wondering why, as we do not profit financially in any way from the webpage, and only seek to highlight British-Jewish playwrights? Best wishes — Preceding unsigned comment added by Banalername (talkcontribs) 09:32, 8 May 2019 (UTC)

Banalername From the two replies you've had to your queries from editors who reverted your additions, it looks as if you'll have to accept the situation. But thanks for attempting to help: further citations on Wikipedia articles are in general welcome. Try to widen your range of sources. Books from recognised publishers, and the more reputable journals and magazines, are regarded more highly as sources here than many websites where we can't quite tell how reliable their information is. Help:Find sources and pages linked from there may be worth a look. Oh, and please "sign" any further posts to discussion pages: Bhunacat10 (talk), 12:16, 8 May 2019 (UTC)

Table sorting question[edit]

Sorting the table at List of murdered musicians by age at death places Anne Boleyn as the first even though she was neither the youngest or the oldest musician to be murdered. This is probably because her entry is the only one whose "age" column starts with "c." instead of a number. Is there a way to go around this so it would sort as "35"? JIP | Talk 09:34, 8 May 2019 (UTC)

@JIP: Per Help:Sorting#Specifying a sort key for a cell, you could use data-sort-value="35". Jc86035 (talk) 10:39, 8 May 2019 (UTC)

HTML Error on a userpage[edit]

Resolved

I noticed some errors at the top of User talk:Slatersteven and was going to advise the user how to fix them, but I am having a hard time figuring out exactly what to fix. In particular, I can't find he string table id="archivebox" in the source. Is there a template that needs fixing? --Guy Macon (talk) 15:25, 8 May 2019 (UTC)

It's {{Archive box}} which hasn't been set up, still contains "<yes|no>". – Þjarkur (talk) 15:32, 8 May 2019 (UTC)

OK, I got the archive box where it doesn't throw an error, but I need to get it pointing at his old archives and to make sure that it will display the new archives as ClueBot III creates them. His list of old archives is at

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:PrefixIndex/User_talk:Slatersteven/

Would this be a situation where moving the old archives makes more sense than trying to get arhive box to point to the existing archives?

BTW he seems fine with having someone else fix this for him, so if someone can do better than my bumbling efforts, please just go ahead and fix the page at User talk:Slatersteven. --Guy Macon (talk) 17:27, 8 May 2019 (UTC)

...and it's fixed. As usual, it was something simple that I wasn't seeing. --Guy Macon (talk) 18:28, 8 May 2019 (UTC)

Is it worth creating a "National presidents elected by a two-round system" category?[edit]

Hi, there are a few national presidents elected by a two-round system (e.g. Argentina, France and Poland); wouldn't be it prudent to create a category so people interested in which are elected this way can more easily find them? Fuse809 (contribs · email · talk · uploads) 16:07, 8 May 2019 (UTC)

"Two-round system" seems a bit vague. There are a bunch of systems. See Electoral system and Comparison of electoral systems. Do you have a source that you were thinking of using to verify which leader ("president" isn't the word used on some countries) was elected with which system? --Guy Macon (talk) 17:41, 8 May 2019 (UTC)
It's probably too varied to be worth categorizing in this way. Every country has it's own system of elections, and "two round system" may apply to some of them, but is to vague to carry much meaning. --Jayron32 18:06, 8 May 2019 (UTC)
The two-round system article lists plenty of presidents elected this way, https://pdfs.semanticscholar.org/389d/dcf5a2b25e4452bdf06ca3cd70fd286c8712.pdf (page 3) at least provides a credible source for the following countries having a two-round system:
  • Argentina
  • France
  • Poland
  • Russia

Jayron, if it's too vague, then why do we have an article on it? If it's too vague then surely that article shouldn't exist. Fuse809 (contribs · email · talk · uploads) 18:52, 8 May 2019 (UTC)

A two-round system is a property of the election and not the office. I don't see it as a defining characteristic for articles like President of Argentina. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:55, 8 May 2019 (UTC)
No, it is not a defining characteristic of the role of the president, but it is a relevant part of how they're appointed. Just like the distinction between a president elected by the people directly and one elected by a vote in the legislature or in an electoral college. Frankly, if I were you I would have wikilinked WP:NONDEF to support the idea that nondefining characteristics should not give rise to separate categories, instead of WP:CATDEF. But, given that I did find that article, I suppose if there's an existing consensus I can manage to let this go, although it does still seem relevant to me. Requesting guidance on reducing the promotional nature of article[edit]

I'm having trouble understanding how this article can be improved to seem less promotional. Any pointers would be appreciated! AdA&D 17:54, 8 May 2019 (UTC)

In addition to what you've been told on the article talk page, which is the proper place for this discussion, it isn't necessary to mention the brand name eighty times within the article.--Shantavira|feed me 08:20, 9 May 2019 (UTC)
Okay, I'll remove some duplicates of the company name from the article. I asked here because there was no actionable feedback given on the article talk page after I waited for a week. Question for Wikapedia.org?[edit]

Following this link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_wars_by_death_toll#Ancient_wars I could not find any mention of the casualties of war between Native Americans and Ethnic European Invaders, I considered myself looking from 1750-1900 but saw no listing for Native American nor European nor African causalities of said invasion. I was wondering why. Was it that like Negroes, Native Americans were not considered human and simply nuisance animals as Europeans didn't keep track of how many buffaloes nor wolves nor bears they killed; but, one would think that they would keep up with the number of white settlers and white and buffalo soldiers were killed. Thanks, J. Dexter Smith — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hunkahunka01 (talkcontribs) 18:50, 8 May 2019 (UTC)

Hunkahunka01 There are several reasons for that. First, the section you linked to specifically deals with Ancient wars, and the American Indian Wars would be considered modern wars. I'm not sure if you looked in the modern section or not, but either way none of the American Indian Wars appear to be listed. The article American Indian Wars does not provide casualty figures either, but many of the daughter articles on specific conflicts such as Northwest Indian War do provide approximate casualty figures. Another issue is that many of the conflicts between ethnic Europeans and Native Americans (such as the Cherokee–American wars) get swept up in broader conflicts such as the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812, where various Native American tribes would ally with, for example, the French or the British or whomever they thought most likely to actually honor a treaty and allow them to live in peace. In those instances, casualties would be included in the broader conflicts, which are listed in that list. Lastly, this is Wikipedia, so if there is a conflict missing from that list and you have reliable sourcing for the casualty figures, feel free to add it. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 19:09, 8 May 2019 (UTC)

Workpage or Userpage?[edit]

Hello, I'd like to add new sections to an article to make it more comprehensive and was wondering if a Workpage or Userpage would be better to draft the content?

Thanks, --Kelsey246! (talk) 21:44, 8 May 2019 (UTC)

Kelsey246!, if you think it will take you a while to write the material, you can draft it in your sandbox. (Or, you can draft it in a text file on your computer—but of course you won't be able to see the rendered version that way.) Eman235/talk 22:33, 8 May 2019 (UTC)
Eman235, if I wanted to get feedback on the sections before I posted them, would a sandbox still be best? Can I edit my sandbox if I've already used it for a different article that has been redirected? Thanks, --Kelsey246! (talk) 13:43, 9 May 2019 (UTC)
Kelsey246!, you can still edit your sandbox (this link might be helpful). If you want to get feedback on the sections before putting them in the article (this isn't really necessary, though, see WP:BRD), your sandbox is probably a good place.
Be aware that if someone else edits your sandbox while you're drafting the sections, you should properly attribute them when you copy it over to the article. Something similar to the edit summary "New sections copied from https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Sandbox&type=revision&diff=896319401&oldid=896312719&diffmode=source" (see help with getting a diff range) should be adequate. Eman235/talk 19:09, 9 May 2019 (UTC)
Eman235, that helps a lot. Thank you! --Kelsey246! (talk) 14:10, 10 May 2019 (UTC)

ECP % of Articles[edit]

Hi all,

Various places on Wikipedia state that 5% of articles on Wikipedia are semi-protected. I'm not actually sure that remains correct, since I think it was determined a while ago, but I'm happy enough to accept it for now.

Do we have a similar known % for Extended-Confirmed Protection?

Thanks Nosebagbear (talk) 10:37, 9 May 2019 (UTC)

Notice that dividing by 5.8M million articles yields about 0.1% of semiprotected pages, so either the 5% figure needs serious updating or the category count is off. TigraanClick here to contact me 11:48, 9 May 2019 (UTC)
Semi-protected articles tend to be vastly more popular than average articles. Perhaps the 5% refers to the proportion of page views to semi-protected articles? Adrian J. Hunter(talkcontribs) 05:13, 10 May 2019 (UTC)

The Wikipedia entry for Paul Brydges does not have a photo. And, after an admittedly very brief search, never has. I believe you're probably looking at the Google search results which include a quick bio of a subject with photos. That bio is taken from Wikipedia but the photo is an error on Google's part and we have no control over that. †dismas†|(talk) 16:06, 9 May 2019 (UTC)
You can tell Google about the problem by clicking on the tiny little grey "feedback" link at the bottom right of their summary. We cannot directly tell Google to do anything, but we have noticed that Google tends to use Wikipedia's picture when it exists instead of wandering around the web to find a different image. Therefore, one way to work around this problem is to find (or better, take your own) picture that is not encumbered by copyright, and add it to the Wikipedia article. Streabs' (that's me) contribution to Ars Moriendi. (re note 8)[edit]

Hello there,

I would like to thank both the lady who welcomed me having subscribed, and perhaps was very kind and practical regarding my initial attempt at contributing to Wiki the modern English text of the late middle ages original Ars Moriendi; and to CLCStudent, thanks for letting me know something was wrong yesterday - with the technicals I assume, I will indeed start again if necessary, and successful with the sandbox though am greatly hoping that might not be necessary. I could not activate any talk page back to either of you.

Is there any way that i can recapture the text i wrote yesterday ? Having experimented, until just now i was confident that the half day's work was successfully uploaded? onto the Ars Moriendi page and i got to two pages short of half way.

I think my efforts are worth persevering with. Ars Moriendi has not been transcribed on Google or Wiki before as far as i can find, and is of interest to historians and polymaths, atheists and theists alike.

Many thanks there. I fear that i'm too inept at anything remotely complicated to do with computers, but am trying and applying to it all nevertheless.

All regards, Streabs. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Streabs (talkcontribs) 15:50, 9 May 2019 (UTC)

Dear Help Desk editors,

Today I received a solicitation to have a Wikipedia article written about me. In addition to the expected advertising blurb, there was also this:

We have been editing on Wikipedia for 9+ years and We've created tons of pages for companies, people, brands, products, and of course for academic purposes as well.

We own multiple accounts on Wikipedia with page curation and new page reviewer rights, so we can create and moderate pages with almost zero risk of another mod taking it down.

which makes me suspect this is a real editor breaking our paid editing rules.

My main question: How should I handle this--is there a project to report to that tracks down rogue editors? Or is just ignoring it the best policy?

Thanks in advance for your guidance! --{{u|Mark viking}} {Talk} 17:43, 9 May 2019 (UTC)

@Mark viking: If the people working for this company each have their own individual Wikipedia accounts, and comply with WP:PAID, it would be okay from a policy standpoint; if the company "owns" the accounts and they are used by different individuals, that is blockable per WP:NOSHARE. If they don't comply with WP:PAID, that is a Terms of Use violation and blockable.
No one can guarantee that a page cannot be taken down, although having the rights mentioned would make inappropriate pages harder to detect. 331dot (talk) 19:49, 9 May 2019 (UTC)
@Mark viking: Of course, the company could be lying. – Teratix 23:30, 9 May 2019 (UTC)
I would ask for links to samples of their work. I would also ask if they are in compliance with the TOU and WP:PAID. There are scammers out there. If they aren't abiding by those guidelines they'll probably not respond to you. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 00:50, 10 May 2019 (UTC)
Thank you all for your advice. You're right, the rules surrounding paid editing are more nuanced than I had originally considered. I'll proceed with that in mind. --{{u|Mark viking}} {Talk} 05:15, 10 May 2019 (UTC)

Wiktionary in hatnotes[edit]

Is it appropriate to link sibling projects in hatnotes? For example, I was surprised to see that the article "Started" was written about the song. I don't disagree with this titling, however, I was wondering on principle whether it is appropriate or not to include a Wiktionary link here. Thanks. TheKaphox T 19:10, 9 May 2019 (UTC)

TheKaphox Hatnotes are generally there to direct readers to other articles within Wikipedia. For a single-word title using an uncommon word without its own Wikipedia article, I think you might add a Wiktionary link as a parenthesis in the first sentence, a bit like when we give a translation of a foreign-language title: "Apophthegm (Wiktionary definition) is a 1973 film about...". But we have to assume that readers of English Wikipedia can parse common English words and their grammatical variants. The article does go into some detail about the lyrics and indicates why that title was chosen. Hope I've understood your question rightly: Bhunacat10 (talk), 12:44, 10 May 2019 (UTC)

How to delete[edit]

how do i delete my 2 other list of local accounts what i did not meant to add — Preceding unsigned comment added by Patient support (talkcontribs) 19:13, 9 May 2019 (UTC)

Patient support I'm not entirely clear on what you mean, but accounts cannot be deleted. If you created additional accounts for some reason and did not mean to, simply stop using them. 331dot (talk) 19:51, 9 May 2019 (UTC)

The entry on this fails to mention that the term "stressor: was coined in 1950 by Hans Selye to distinguish it from stress. {Paul J. Rosch, MD.FACP — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.197.81.99 (talk) 19:33, 9 May 2019 (UTC)

Template:Calendar[edit]

Considering the above template, is there any way to get rid of the ugly double boldface setting of the month names, e. g. as in Template:Calendar#Examples?--Hildeoc (talk) 21:00, 9 May 2019 (UTC)

Personally not quite seeing the problem here Hildeoc, but if you think it worth pursuing the template has its own talk page. If no response there you could try the Wikiproject: Bhunacat10 (talk), 08:37, 10 May 2019 (UTC)

Notability of a Simpsons episode[edit]

Does I'm Just a Girl Who Can't Say D'oh meet the notability guideline? It's an episode of The Simpsons tagged with Template:Notability, which has a review written about it in its section and 600+ other episodes in the series that pass the notability guideline, but I'm not sure if that's enough here. -BRAINULATOR9 (TALK) 01:23, 10 May 2019 (UTC)

Unable to create an account[edit]

I am not able to create an account on Wikipedia as it shows username is similar — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2405:205:7:fb9b:49c1:271:e74d:fc2 (talkcontribs)

You will have to pick a different name then. You can check if a particular name has already been used here Special:ListUsers Meters (talk) 06:40, 10 May 2019 (UTC)
If the message says the name is too similar to an existing username (always quote actual error messages) then you can sometimes get it anyway at Wikipedia:Request an account. It's easier to just pick another name. PrimeHunter (talk) 19:48, 10 May 2019 (UTC)

Article "Taichung's 7th Redevelopment Zone" gallery[edit]

Hi,

The article Taichung's 7th Redevelopment Zone's gallery section has huge images. Are gallery sections allowed to look like that? Ganbaruby! 06:43, 10 May 2019 (UTC)

Help:Cite errors/Cite error references no text (2)[edit]

Dear Help Desk

I hope I am at the right place and hope not to waste your precious time. I try to contribute to the article Richard Hamilton (officer) and I want to use the reference to Sergeant (1914) p 217 defined in the section "In French service" and numbered [4] a second time in the new section "Life dates" that follows further down, using the refname, which should normally be FOOTNOTESergeant1913217. However, I get the error: Cite Error the named reference FOOTNOTESergeant1913217 was invoked but never defined (See the help page) The problem seems to be caused by me using a shortened foot note (sfn) rather than <ref>...</ref> and giving not only the page number but also an URL. The p parameter of my sfn therefore reads p=217. I have of course tried to guess what the right refname might be for that case but do not seem to get it right. With many thanks. Johannes Schade (talk) 07:43, 10 May 2019 (UTC)

@Johannes Schade: Would this work? Sam Sailor 08:38, 10 May 2019 (UTC)
Dear Sam Sailor. Your proposition works as you have shown, but it does not produce the desired result as your version creates a new footnote, numbered 29, instead of using the existing one, numbered 4. Technically speaking your solution creates a new different refname. I think one needs to find the refname created in the older [4] sfn invocation. With many thanks Johannes Schade (talk) 09:28, 10 May 2019 (UTC)
  • @Johannes Schade: If I understand correctly, you want to invoke the same footnote reference number at different places in the text. I believe it is not possible with shortened footnotes, whose express purpose is to create multiple citations to the same source with different page numbers. (Think about it: if the first footnote refers to page 1 and the second refers to page 2, what should the unique footnote text be?)
You could use instead named references (see Help:Referencing_for_beginners#Same_reference_used_more_than_once), which you can call multiple times (but then you cannot specify page numbers since there is a single reference). TigraanClick here to contact me 12:22, 10 May 2019 (UTC)
Dear Tigraan. Surely one could but I would like to use sfn. Johannes Schade (talk) 13:31, 10 May 2019 (UTC)
@Johannes Schade: The workaround is to use {{harvnb}} in <ref>...</ref> tags, result, see here. Simply duplicating the sfn verbatim works as well, see Special:Diff/896418752/896442393. If that is done often and the quotes are long, that might result in a bit of clutter. Sam Sailor 14:44, 10 May 2019 (UTC)
Dear Sam Sailor. Repeting the entire sfn verbatim gives the desired result. This is an acceptable solution. However this must also include the quote in the ps parameter which might be long and the entire second quote becomes a bit long as you say. Is there no way to work out what the refname should be? I do not understand your other method using harvnb in ref tags.
Dear Sam Sailor. I understand. I use ref tags with name=XXX around a harvnb invocation with all the parameters of the sfn at the first place, then an empty re tag with name=XXX in subsequent places. That works well because I do not need to repeat the parameters (notably the quote) in the subsequebnt places. I think this is solved. Thank you VERY much! JacekVR, I'm not sure why you say you can not find the way how to communicate with Icewhiz, since the two of you seem to have a back and forth conversation on Talk:"Polish_death_camp"_controversy#Why_an_important_discovery_of_an_editorial_infringement_of_Jan_Karski_article_1944_has_been_removed_from_Wikipedia?. You should continue the conversation there. It was a non-displayed source comment marked by <!-- ... --> in source text. I see you use VisualEditor. VisualEditor shows an exclamation mark at comments. Help:Cite errors/Cite error ref too many keys[edit]

Hi, I am trying to edit a page as part of a class assignment, and I keep getting errors about my citations either having too many names, or that they have been invoked, but not defined. I've tried to fix them several times now, and I've tried reading over the help page, but I'm still having issues. CommanderCanary (talk) 21:37, 10 May 2019 (UTC)Canary

Hi CommanderCanary, could you give an example of where you're seeing that error? – Ammarpad (talk) 05:34, 11 May 2019 (UTC)

Zynex page[edit]

Good afternoon,

Sorry, I'm new to the whole Wikipedia editing universe. I currently work for Zynex Medical and would like to request a change and help in regards to uploading our logo.

We currently go by Zynex Medical in professional settings and try not to use just Zynex anymore. Could we have the page renamed to Zynex Medical? Also, it won't let me upload our logo. What is the best way to go about getting our logo on the wiki page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dzwygart (talkcontribs) 21:43, 10 May 2019 (UTC)

We do not care how the company prefers to be called. Instead, we go by the principle that an article will be titled according to the most commonly used name for the subject in this language. Thus, we don't call the article about the "National Socialist German Workers Party" by that name, because in English it's called the Nazi Party. --Orange Mike | Talk 01:52, 11 May 2019 (UTC)
Dzwygart, as for Zynex's logo, see Wikipedia:Logos and Wikipedia:Uploading images. Eman235/talk 02:29, 11 May 2019 (UTC)

What happened to Structured Discussions?[edit]

Wikipedia:Structured Discussions was supposed to replace talk pages but it never happened why was it cancelled and is there any plans to make the talk pages easier for new users or to redesign them — Preceding unsigned comment added by Abote2 (talkcontribs)

Yes that was the initial intention but there was a massive pushback from the community so the project was halted. It was not even fully deployed at the time. There are still efforts underway to improve or revamp talkpage/discussion pages on Wikimedia projects; see the ongoing consultation at meta:Communications/Wikimedia brands/2030 research and planning/community review, you can also add your feedback on the talkpage. – Ammarpad (talk) 10:59, 11 May 2019 (UTC)

According to this, the page was written like an advertisment. You need to write in a neutral point of view in Wikipedia and the subject needs to be notable enough for Wikipedia. MadGuy7023 (talk) 12:25, 11 May 2019 (UTC)
