Donald #Trump has threatened to use his presidential veto after the US Senate delivered a sharp rebuke to the president on Thursday (Mar 14), voting to overturn his declaration last month of a #nationalemergency in order to divert taxpayer funds to the US-Mexico border. In a 59-41 vote, 12 #Republicans joined every Senate Democrat in a rare move to block the president’s effort to divert billions in funding to build his long-promised #borderwall without congressional approval.

The Democratic-controlled House passed the measure last month, and its approval in the Senate will probably force Trump to use the first veto of his presidency. The defections on Thursday fell far short of the 67 votes needed to override the veto, however. Trump ultimately failed to allay the concerns within his party that the action violated the constitution’s separation of powers, which confers the power of the purse to Congress.

Scientists Shed Light On Make-Up Of Earth's Core

Experiments conducted at extreme conditions are giving scientists new insights into the chemical make-up of the Earth's core.
Advanced laboratory techniques reveal that our planet's metal centre – more than 1,800 miles below the surface – also contains silicon, an element commonly found in stony meteorites.

The findings support an existing theory that suggests Earth's formation around 4.5 billion years ago was driven by extensive interactions between stony and iron-rich meteorites inside a cloud of dust and gas. This huge cloud of material also formed the Sun.

Beehive Creek Falls Coopracambra National Park
Celebration: countdown 11

Water in the Beehive Creek is crystal clear - fizzing with air from its drop through the high alpine forests.

More shots at: http://www.silenttheory.net/

Coopracambra (in the Genoa basin) is a high, remote Victorian wilderness area full of undiscovered wonders.

I first ventured here a couple of years ago, but i fell into the ravine and was chased out by a couple of dingos.

I have come here many times since but i play it very safe, avoiding the area if cut off by floodwaters (floodwater adds layers of uncertainty to any waterfall adventure).

Image: A panorama of 5 shots, hand focused, and toned for structure (the underlying rock has interesting tones and patterns, showing some signs of tool sharpening, patterned so as to evoke a hexagonal pattern in water spray from certain view points).

Celebrate: Thank you. To celebrate what we all achieved on G+, i am publishing the 50 most viewed posts in this collection (with 400m views) until shutdown. This is an unreprocessed image of this fall (11th most viewed 2.6m views).

Lifeboats
Celebration: countdown 10

If you have enjoyed your experience, please consider joining Chris Sutton and a number of other fine photographers on a new site Chris is building to replace our beloved G+. Check it out at:

https://www.tipua.com

(Tipua is the the ancient New Zealand word for the spirit which surprises - a nice name for Chris's remarkable gift. Not only does this site promise to be good for all those interested in photography and art, or just staying in touch - Chris has also written about making the site a cooperative - a radical departure at a time when corporate greed and advertisers are stifling creativity and initiative.)

I have departed from my ordinary practice of publishing a waterfall tonight to also advise that my own website has just relaunched with a huge amount of new content and a massive database of falls with pictures and stories. (Back to falls tomorrow night :) ).

http://www.silenttheory.net/

Image: While here on G+, i built lots of 'stage props' for the stories, plays and fun we have had. This one was one of the more extreme efforts :)

A Small Piece of the Milky Way

One from last weekend that shows the constant struggle landscape photographers have- waiting for the right conditions.

This is a shot I like to do every spring. In Feb and Mar I can get this shot right before dawn with the Milky Way rising and the trees have not leafed out. between the February and March new moons I have a couple of opportunities to get this shot. I tried the first three weekends in February- Overcast or raining every day. I tried March 3rd, raining. I tried again last weekend. Rain one day and partly cloudy forecast for last Sunday. So I chanced it. I drove to the river. Made my way through the woods. Waded down the river in the dark to this spot. then set up the cameras and made images. Only a few have any of the Milky Way at all. This probably being the best.

The forecast was for clear this morning so I planned to go again. Except we got a lot of rain overnight Tuesday. The river normally will be 2 to 3 feet (1m) deep but was running 4 feet (1.3m) deeper. Now at 7 feet deep, there is no way to cross. The sky was clear but the river was too deep and too fast to wade safely. So I wait, watch and hope the river goes down quick and the sky stays clear as this weekend is my last chance of 2019 to get this shot as by April the trees will all be green and leafy.

Remember that G+ is closing in 3 weeks. Follow me on Flickr before then....

Pi Day 2019 - The Value of π is Woven into the Fabric of Life, the Universe and Everything

HAPPY PI DAY: March 14th (3.14) is π day, and all around the world pi-philes are celebrating one of the most compelling and mysterious constants of Nature. Pi appears in equations describing the orbits of planets, the colors of auroras, the structure of DNA. The value of π is woven into the fabric of life, the universe and ... everything.
Albert Einstein was born on Pi Day: March 14, 1879, Stephen Hawkings died on Pi Day: March 14, 2018.
