Blubbery Bliss

An enormous southern elephant seal (Mirounga leonina) is napping peacefully, in Gold Harbour, South Georgia Island.

An albatross and an iceberg move at their own paces over the sea, near Drygalski Fjord, South Georgia Island.

Never Go First

These macaroni penguins (Eudyptes chrysolophus) are carefully inspecting the water for leopard seals; the first one in is at greatest risk. But watch out for one of your "friends" giving you a little shove from behind to help you get in! You can see their beautiful crests; the one on the right is younger and doesn't have its full crest yet -- they grow in over two or three years. From Cooper Bay, South Georgia Island.

Naiad

This king penguin (Aptenodytes patagonicus) found such a beautiful spot, I was imagining it as the spirit of the waterfall! In its summer, the Antarctic region isn't all snow and ice; this is from Fortuna Bay, South Georgia Island.
