What rate should a producer charge?

Many ACX actors are members of the SAG-AFTRA union, and as members, they can accept no less than $225 per finished hour for projects or Royalty Share projects carrying a $100 Stipend in order to contribute to their Health & Retirement accounts.

When determining what rate to charge Rights Holders for pay-for-production deals, you should consider:

  • your level of experience
  • the amount of work that will go into your production (including script prep, recording, editing, and post production)
  • the cost of your equipment and or studio time
  • the amount of time you'll dedicate to the production.

What does "cost per finished hour" mean?

Audiobook Producers are paid based on the length of the completed book. It's a method that helps everyone involved better estimate the project's cost. A Producer will receive payment at the end of the upload process based on the final run time of the audiobook. When the project is complete, the system will multiply the final running minutes of the audio by the agreed upon rate on the contract to let the Rights Holder know how much they will need to pay the producer.

This is done, for example, because if a Rights Holder were instead to pay the Producer for the total number of hours worked on the project, they probably would not be able to get a good sense of what the final cost will be. This is partially because they might not know how many hours are actually put into the project, and also because different Producers can work at very different paces. Paying per finished hour also encourages a Producer to prepare well and work efficiently, since they will get paid the same amount regardless of how long it takes to complete the job.

What are the terms of a Royalty Share deal?

In order to enter a Royalty Share deal, a Rights Holder must select Exclusive distribution. Exclusive distribution means that the audiobook will only be available on Audible, Amazon and iTunes.

Royalties of 40% will be paid or Exclusive distribution projects.;When entering a Royalty Share contract, that 40% will be split between the Rights Holder and Producer, providing each with 20% of the royalties from each sale.

Read more about the terms of this agreement here.

What royalty is paid on ACX?

ACX authors and publishers can earn between 20%-40% of their title royalties through ACX. The royalty rate you earn is determined by the distribution option you select and the method by which the Producer is compensated. For non-exclusive distribution, the Rights Holder earns a 25% royalty and must compensate the Producer up-front. In an exclusive distribution deal, the Rights Holder earns a 40% royalty, if compensating the Producer up-front. If the Rights Holder and Producer agree to share royalties, each earns a 20% royalty.

Read more about royalties and earnings here.

How often will I be paid?

ACX royalty and bounty payments will be delivered by Audible to the bank account you provide on a monthly basis for sales from the previous month (e.g. sales in March 2015 will be paid no later than April 30, 2015). ACX will also provide you with a statement of royalties.

How do Narrators or Studio Pros get paid by the Rights Holder?

The payment process depends on the type of offer accepted, and if the offer was accepted under SAG-AFTRA terms.

  1. If the offer accepted was for Royalty Share, the Rights Holder does not pay the producer. All payments to the producer are distributed by Audible.
  2. If the accepted offer was for Pay-For-Production, the payment process is determined by the producer's acceptance with, or without, AFTRA H&R Contributions.
    • If the producer does not accept "with AFTRA H&R", the rights holder pays the producer directly. Both parties must discuss the exact method (check, PayPal, etc.). This should be done soon after the offer is accepted.
    • If the Producer accepts the offer "with AFTRA H&R", the rights holder must send payment to a designated Paymaster. The Paymaster will send payment to the producer, and handle all other union-related payment needs. Click here for further details.

You may use any SAG-AFTRA-approved paymaster. Our preferred Paymaster is Eljin Productions.

Note: The AFTRA H&R contribution will only be made if payment is handled via the Paymaster.

How can I pay for my ACX Audiobook production?

If you are using a Narrator/Producer through the ACX site, you and your Producer can agree to a Pay for Production Fee (a one-time flat fee based on the length of the finished Audiobook) or a Royalty Share Deal (in which case your Producer won't earn money up front, but will instead share in the proceeds from the sale of your Audiobook 50-50).

If you contract a Producer for a Pay-for-Production deal, you should discuss how they wish to be paid before starting the project. Many narrators accept cash, check, money order, credit cards, or Paypal. Please discuss this with your narrator.

If you are supplying your own audio, and do not use an ACX Narrator/Producer, there are no costs involved with using ACX.

How are ACX royalties calculated?

Each sale of an Audiobook you create through ACX falls under one of three different categories: AL, ALC, and ALOP. Your monthly royalty report will break out sales in all three categories.

  • AL = This is a member sale in which an AudibleListener purchased your Audiobook using a membership credit.
  • ALOP = This is a member sale in which an AudibleListener purchased your Audiobook with a credit card. We pay you the royalty based on the net sale of that transaction.
  • ALC = This is an a la carte purchase made by a nonmember.

We pay you the royalty based on the net sale of that transaction. The percentage of royalties you earn on each sale will be calculated based on the contract you entered with ACX at the beginning of an Audiobook's production. For more information, please review the Royalty Payment Terms and Procedures.
