The mission of the Accessible Rich Internet Applications Working Group (ARIA WG) is to develop technologies that enhance accessibility of web content for people with disabilities. This includes continued development of the Accessible Rich Internet Applications (WAI-ARIA) suite of technologies and other technical specifications when needed to bridge known gaps.
Announcements
2018-03-16 - Personalization Semantics Explainer and Content module updated: The ARIA WG has published an updated draft of Personalization Semantics Explainer 1.0 and Personalization Semantics Content Module 1.0. The explainer adds a Vocabulary Identification section, does some changes in sections of WAI-ARIA and HTML Microdata, also replaces the RDFa section with editor's note. The Content module removes aui prefixes from property names, changes some examples and adds some editor's note in the document. Please comment by 13 April 2018.
2018-03-20 - Wide review: Wide review: Accessible Name and Description Computation: The ARIA WG has published a wide review draft of Accessible Name and Description Computation 1.1. This document describes how user agents determine the names and descriptions of accessible objects, where information comprising that name can come from various characteristics of the content, in order to lead to a consistent result across implementations. The document previously included Accessibility API Mappings, which have been moved to Core Accessibility API Mappings, so this document only describes the procedure to determine accessible name and description, not how to expose it. 2018-03-29 - Candidate Recommendation: WAI-ARIA Graphics Module and Graphics Accessibility API Mappings: The ARIA WG has published WAI-ARIA Graphics Module 1.0 and Graphics Accessibility API Mappings 1.0. The Working Group targets 27 April 2018 to complete the testing process and produce the implementation report.
Current Work
The Working Group maintains a comprehensive list of publications and status, which include:
- WAI-ARIA 1.1,
- WAI-ARIA 1.1 modules for Digital Publishing and Graphics,
- Accessibility API Mappings for ARIA, Digital Publishing, HTML, and SVG, and
- WAI-ARIA Authoring Practices.
The ARIA Project Plan details intended timeline and milestones for this work.
Task Forces
The ARIA WG uses task forces to focus work on specific projects. Current task forces include:
- User Agent Implementation Task Force: develop guidelines for interoperable user agent implementation of the WAI-ARIA specification;
- SVG Accessibility Task Force: identify the accessibility requirements and manage the progress of accessibility solutions in SVG2, while expanding participation and fostering collaboration among experts in SVG and Web Accessibility as a means to meet the requirements and goals of each group and to increase mutual understanding;
- Digital Publishing Accessibility Task Force: create a recommended list of digital publishing terms allowing for clear interaction with assistive technologies, easy reusability. and native validation;
- ARIA Authoring Practices sub-group: focuses on ARIA Authoring Practices.
- Personalization Task Force: refine the Personalization Semantics specification.

The ARIA WG conducts its work using a variety of synchronous and asynchronous tools. The communication page provides details about:

Administrative Information
Work of the ARIA WG is in accordance with the W3C Process. ARIA WG work is funded in part by the WAI Core 2015 Project. The work of this group does not necessarily reflect the views or policies of the funders.
The chairs of the ARIA WG, responsible for overall leadership and management, are Joanmarie Diggs and James Nurthen. The staff contact, responsible for W3C Process and general support, is Michael Cooper.
