Our charity exists to save lives at sea. Our mission is to save every one. Our lifesavers are compelled to help those in need without judgement of how they came to be in the water. They have done so since the RNLI was founded in 1824 and this will always be our ethos.

Happy birthday to the , founded in 1948. With the benefit of a birds-eye view over England's countryside, our Aerial Investigation and Mapping team have spotted some recent tributes to the NHS while undertaking their daily duties from the sky. Take a look 👀

    East of Wilberfoss, York

Just to the east of Wilberfoss, a village in the East Riding of Yorkshire, is an ‘NHS’ marked out in a parched Summer field to the north of the nurseries at Sandy Acres.

A large heart with ‘NHS’ carved in its centre and sunflowers sprouting from above can be seen inscribed into a maze field on Hayling Island, just off the south coast of England.

Burghley House Park and Garden, Peterborough

Burghley House is one of the largest surviving houses of the 16th century and was designed by William Cecil, Lord High Treasurer to Queen Elizabeth I, between 1555 and 1587. The parkland and gardens of Burghley House were created by the famous landscape architect Capability Brown and are listed at Grade II*. The ‘NHS’ letters have been cut in the grass within the gardens, in amongst clumps of trees.

A large soil mark showing support for the NHS was created by farmers in a field by East Meon on the South Downs. This image is one of the many photographed tributes to the NHS we have seen over the past year taken by members of the public as part of Historic England's Picturing Lockdown Collection.
