Study Shows Midlife Physical Activity Not Linked to Later Life Cognitive Fitness

A study led by Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health researchers that tracked activity levels of 646 adults over 30 years found that, contrary to previous research, exercise in mid-life was not linked to cognitive fitness in later years.

The research is in Journal of Alzheimer's Disease (full open access)

Who Made Linux and Why Is It Free?

Linux is the most widely-used free and open source operating system in the world. Unlike commercial alternatives, no single person or company can take credit. Linux is what it is due to the ideas and contributions of many individuals from all over the world.

Here are some of the big names behind Linux and the ethical movements that have caused it to spread far and wide. This list by no means includes all of the people whose work has made the free desktop what it is. Instead, these are the Bill Gates and Steve Jobs of the Linux world, figures who founded many of the projects and organizations we now depend on.

An interesting rundown (and quick read) of what Linux is, how it relates to the GNU Project and how some of the big names helped evolve it.

Diamond Ring

Driving 17 hours from Muskoka, Ontario, Canada to Greenville, South Carolina, USA all for less than 4 minutes of awesomeness! My friend Richard and I drove out to meet Brian (Brian Drourr Photography) in SC and the next thing you know our Aurora chasing friends Becki and Chris (Aurora Addicts - Northern Lights Holidays and Tours) from the UK came to Greenville, SC to meet up with us. I love when you get to meet the people you follow on social media in person. We ended up with an amazing group of photographers which were we all helped each other with exposure settings, different things to look for during the eclipse (not just up) as well as making sure people viewed the eclipse safely. First sign of c2 you hear everyone yelling "diamond ring" as the wave of yelling echoes through the field of observers this was the sing to let everyone know now is the time we can view this epic phenomenon without solar glasses. I was extremely loud and hyper the entire time and I laugh because when that diamond ring came into frame I went CRAZY. You could hear me for miles yelling "diamond ring" and that was only the start. The entire field, town, anyone under the line of totality was screaming, dancing and just enjoying this rare moment in time, untied by one star, our Sun! As the sky darkens, the air cools and you look up to see full totality instantly chills and a blissful feeling would overwhelm you as the goosebumps are everywhere! To see the sun complete blocked by the moon while spending time with amazing friends is something that will stay with me forever. The photos are great but the experience is everything! Thank you Ryan for having us in your home and thank you John and Fabiola for the great company! I also have to thank Doug for saving the day with an extra piece of solar film!!!! I am sorry if I left anyone out and I thank you all so much for the weather updates, texts and support during the Great North American Eclipse!

American Dagger Moth Caterpillar ( Acronicta americana )
I found this spectacular fellow crawling up the siding of my mom's house in southern Illinois. He couldn't have cared less about posing for me, so I only got one head-on shot. Oddly, these fanciful, colorful caterpillars turn into relatively drab, gray-brown moths - one of the many ironies in the animal kingdom. :-)

The American dagger moth is a moth of the family Noctuidae and is native to the deciduous woodlands and forests of North America. It can be seen from April to September throughout its range, and the caterpillars can be seen from July to October. It has one brood in the north and two to three broods in the south. The young caterpillar is densely covered with yellow setae (bristles). The older caterpillar's setae are either pale yellow or white. All instars (caterpillar stages) have thin, black setae on the first and third abdominal segments. On the eighth abdominal segment, there is one tuft of black setae. The caterpillar will reach a length 50 mm (2.0 in).

Soft like fur

Hare's-foot clover (Trifolium arvense)

Svartskog, Norway

From a distance the inflorescence of this species looks like a furry soft brush as the incredible number of hairs outnumber the actual white flowers they are protecting.

Here you can see all the stages of flowering, with the ones maturing to seeds at the bottom and the very last of the flowers on the top. The very small inflorescence at the bottom gives a clear view of one of these lovely, small and white flowers.

As I was photographing it started to rain, and some droplets got caught and added even more beauty to the amazing inflorescence. When the air is moist and still, these hairs will be completely covered with tiny droplets and make it a true piece of art, which I hope to capture one day.

To the unaided eye the famous, bright star Antares shines with a strong red tint in the heart of the constellation of Scorpius (The Scorpion. It is a huge and comparatively cool red supergiant star in the late stages of its life, on the way to becoming a supernova [1].

A team of astronomers, led by Keiichi Ohnaka, of the Universidad Catolica del Norte in Chile, has now used ESO's Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) at the Paranal Observatory in Chile to map Antares's surface and to measure the motions of the surface material. This is the best image of the surface and atmosphere of any star other than the Sun.

The VLTI is a unique facility that can combine the light from up to four telescopes, either the 8.2-metre Unit Telescopes, or the smaller Auxiliary Telescopes, to create a virtual telescope equivalent to a single mirror up to 200 metres across. This allows it to resolve fine details far beyond what can be seen with a single telescope alone.

Hinode Satellite Views Aug. 21 Eclipse

As millions of Americans watched the total solar eclipse that crossed the continental United States Aug. 21, the international Hinode solar observation satellite captured its own images of the awe-inspiring natural phenomenon as it orbited the planet.

Hinode is a joint endeavor by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, the European Space Agency, the United Kingdom Space Agency and NASA.
