Does GiveWell charge fees on donations to its recommended charities?

No, GiveWell collects no fees from donations to its recommended charities. 100% of your donation (after credit card fees) will be used to support the charity or charities of your choice.

Will my donation be tax-deductible?

GiveWell (a.k.a. The Clear Fund) is a federally-recognized tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization. We are able to make grants for the support of our recommended charities, and US donors are able to take tax deductions for donations to GiveWell to the extent permitted by US tax laws. Are there alternative ways I can donate?

Does GiveWell have a preference for how I make my donation?

We recommend that gifts smaller than $1,000 be made online by credit card. More information on considerations for donating via various methods is available here.

How are "grants to recommended charities at GiveWell's discretion" allocated?

GiveWell will apply its judgment to allocate these donations among recommended charities. As of April 2017, we recommend that donors give 100% of their gift to AMF. Our recommendation takes into account the grants we have recommended to Good Ventures and charities’ other sources of funds. We recommend charities according to how much good additional donations can do. Our recommendation may change in the future, and we plan to re-evaluate it if we believe these organizations cannot productively absorb additional funding. More details in this post.

When does GiveWell grant funds it has collected to charities?

We currently plan to make grants to charities every other month, about a month after the end of each period (for example, around the beginning of April based on donations collected in January and February). We may alter this schedule in the future (e.g. if a charity tells us that having the funds sooner will impact its operations or if we face capacity limitations).

Why does GiveWell collect donations on behalf of its recommended charities?

(1) It allows us to track our own impact on donations, (2) it gives us a chance to ask you if you'd like to receive updates on GiveWell's research, and (3) when we grant the funds to the charity, we can designate them as we believe is best (generally as unrestricted donations; more details for GiveDirectly and Evidence Action).

Can I send an acknowledgement to a friend or family member?

There are two options: (1) Use the option on this form to provide an email address for the honoree. We will send them an email letting them know about the gift. (2) Download and use our acknowledgement letter templates.
