The main tasks of the Military Topographic Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces:

• planning and organization of implementation of measures to improve the system of topogeodesic and navigational support of the Armed Forces;
• planning, control and organization of measures on topogeodesic and navigational support for the Armed Forces, as well as in the established order - other Forces, military formations and structures in the interests of guaranteeing the Russian Federation’s defence;
• planning, organization and control of special works on creation of special means of geospatial information about an area, its facilities and infrastructure in order to prepare in advance continental areas in relation to surveying, as well as in the territories of the Russian Federation and foreign countries with participation of a corresponding federal body of executive power and industrial enterprises engaged in geodetic and cartographic activities;
• planning and organization of implementation of combat and mobilization readiness, combat and mobilization training of subordinate military units and organizations, performing of other tasks in order to ensure their daily activities;
• ensuring of implementation by the Ministry of Defence of the state policy in the field of geodesy, cartography, spatial data infrastructure and navigation activities in the interests of the Russian Federation’s defence;
• participation in international military (military technical) cooperation.
