This water boatman (a member of the Corixidae family) appeared in Jordan Lake (Chatham County, North Carolina) in shallow waters near the shore today during an unusual warm spell. It was only a few mm long, but has the well-developed wings characteristic of an adult.

Yes, there's a (well-camouflaged) animal in this picture, a toad bug! Yes, it's in the same suborder as the more familiar stink bugs. This was one of many hopping around the shore of Jordan Lake the other day:

I saw this giant water bug (Belostoma genus) on the mudflats of Jordan Lake four days ago. It wasn't one of the biggest giant water bugs, though: only about an inch long. These bugs normally stay in the water, although they are actually better adapted to breathing out of water (and can fly!) Best seen large!
