As in many other countries, women living with HIV in Brazil often face stigma and discrimination from health care providers, who may be judgmental and not facilitate informed choice. Additionally, sexual and reproductive health services for women living with HIV are often inaccessible or not well-integrated with HIV services. As a result, their sexual and reproductive health needs—such as family planning, the treatment and management of sexually transmitted infections, and cervical cancer screening—are not being met.
EngenderHealth worked with partners, such as the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS, United Nations Population Fund, International Community of Women Living with HIV, and Brazil’s National AIDS Program, to call for services that respond to the needs and rights of women living with HIV. EngenderHealth conducted a research study, organized a national advocacy meeting, and issued policy recommendations to increase national and global focus on the sexual and reproductive health needs and rights of women living with HIV.
