    Agreed w/ that people use my work w/Dorn+Hanson to justify their anti-trade views. But these are not my views nor the conclusions I draw from the work. Like Chip, I strongly support adjustment programs that don’t depend on cause of adjustment (trade v tech v oth)

    (2) Adjustment policies are key and shouldn’t depend on proving the cause of a lost job, but workers want their old job not training for new, and so want to believe Trump. And everybody likes to blame trade and foreigners, and think Autor proves them right in laying blame

    One of my favorite all-time interview experiences was with Russ Roberts on on 3/14/2016 on “Trade, China, and U.S. Labor Markets” . It’s a lively debate: you can hear Russ and I learn from one another in real time!

    This is not Thurow/Krugman. PK & I agree that China’s WTO Accession had sizable, painful disruptive effects on manufacturing workers+communities. We are both pro-trade! Recognizing benefits & costs of trade does not make one anti-trade — though trade evangelists believe otherwise

    Agreed with : the presence of a job ‘imbalance’ is uninformative about whether net economics gains from trade are (+) or (-). But misguided or specious arguments for free trade only confirm the fear that economists are faith-based advocates not scholars on this topic

    He does mention the gross and net impact. Biggest issue is that the loss and the gain were not within the same demographics. That imbalance still doesn’t make the case against trade though.

    Breathtakingly misguided editorial on Trade and Jobs (), bungling the distinction btwn net and gross job flows. Argument “The tide ebbs and flows 730 times a year. So if the water level rises by 2 feet and doesn't drop again, no one should care.”

    Berkeley Econ prof told me once that "If genius was the most important input, we'd just hire people from upstairs" (I think this refers to the fact that the Math dept is directly above the Econ dept at Berkeley)

    Adam alludes to the oft-overlooked fact that I am *not* a real economist (my 1999 Ph.D. is from the Harvard Kennedy School in Public Policy), but I do play one at MIT!

    I'd like to congratulate , Alvin Roth, Adam Smith, and John Maynard Keynes. I hereby officially declare you to be economists.

    Folks—Short paper does not mean non-robust. Appendices are fine. It’s paper bodies that are too damned long—stuffed with self-advertising, needless models, boring extensions, and repetition unto death (“like being bludgeoned to death with a nerf bat”).
