YouTube live in 360 degrees encoder settings

YouTube live Streaming supports 360 degree videos that provide immersive viewing experience. Note that non-360 degree live streams use different settings

YouTube only supports equirectangular projection for 360 videos at this time.

To live stream 360 degree video content, you'll need to change your encoding specifications.

Set up your encoder

  1. Set up your stream as an “Event” on the YouTube live platform. Note: The “Stream Now” method of creating streams does not support 360.
  2. Check the 360° video checkbox in the Advanced Settings tab for your Event. Note: Or you can stream via our API if your device is integrated with YouTube Live in 360 degrees.

  3. Set up your encoder:
    1. Choose the highest supported resolution and bitrate you are able to stream at.
    2. A resolution of 1440p is preferred for live 360.
    3. Choose 16:9 aspect ratio for best video quality.
  4. Start streaming like you do with non-360 degree live streams.

While YouTube supports 2:1 and other aspect ratios, we recommend 16:9 aspect for best video quality. Learn how to use resolution and aspect ratios correctly.

Note: If your camera offers direct integration with YouTube live, follow the directions from your camera manufacturer.

It’s a good idea to run a test before starting a public live stream so you can try different set ups. Tests should include audio and movement similar to what will be in your public live stream.  During the event, monitor sound and video quality, and review error messages.

Supported platforms

YouTube supports live streaming ingestion and playback of 360 degree videos on computers in Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Opera browsers. 360 degree playback is also supported in the YouTube and YouTube Gaming apps for Android and iOS.
