This page hosts requests to stewards and global renamers for a username change across the entire Wikimedia network. Please read the instructions before posting a request. This is also the page where the usurpation of inactive accounts can be requested.

Instructions[edit]

Before posting here[edit]

Please list the specific projects that you need to be renamed in under your request, unless you are requesting a global rename.

To add an entry, please copy and paste the text below into the appropriate section.

Making a request for your own account[edit]

For changing your username on one wiki:

Please include the following information in your request:

  • the old username,
  • the new username,
  • please sign ~~~~ request with your account for a simple move (first section), or sign this request with both the originating and the target accounts if you are requesting a merge (second section).

If anything is missing from your request, a steward will request more information. This helps ensure that you are requesting a rename for your own account. Please check before posting your request that the username you want is available. You can test that by going to the (new) user page and looking into the sidebar. If there is a link to user contributions, the account already exists, or check via Special:CentralAuth.

Private requests[edit]

Requests that need to be made in private should be sent to stewards(at)wikimedia.org (direct wiki-email interface).


Simple rename requests[edit]

If your rename request is simple and does not involve usurpation of an existing account or other SUL issues, you have two options:

  1. Use the request form at Special:GlobalRenameRequest; or
  2. Submit the request below in this section.

Please use this tool to check if the username is taken before filing a request.


Requests involving merges, usurps or other complications[edit]

Please add new requests at the end of the section. Sections should be titled your username and requests should be signed by the requesting user.
Please note: Per standard procedure, accounts with valid edits are not usurped, and the target account must be notified at least one month before usurpation.

This user does not exist, the account apparently was registered 5 years ago on the es wiki, but they have no user page, and 0 edits—Kelvinsong (talk) 18:55, 23 November 2016 (UTC)

  • Reason: Renamed for unification and removing the "thehongkonger" tag would help me participate in more discussions (and more cross-wiki edits). It said that the username had already been registered. However, I cannot see any trace of the Username.

Gabe~1290@global[edit]

  • Stewards/Global renamers: rename user
  • Reason: Hello, I have already made this request in the pas, but I was not able to provide the needed information. My sockpuppet account used to be called Gabe1290. On March 24 2014, a script renamed my account to Gabe1290~frwiki without notifying me. When I found out, I was told that it was not possible to change it back. On January 25 2016, I was able to change the name globally to Gabe~1290, but I still was not able to get Gabe1290 back. Can I usurp the Gabe1290 username since it is not used at all and quite a few of my students know me by my handle ?

Majora (alt)@global[edit]

  • Reason: I would like to have the above username as my alternate account for use on public (unsecured) computers. The account in question was created in 2008, only has an account on enwiki, and has never made any edits.
