Index Composition & Methodology
The S&P; 500 is a float-adjusted market capitalization weighted index of 500 large-cap U.S. companies across a variety of sectors. To be considered as part of the index, a company must have a market capitalization of $5.3 billion or greater, have 50% of shares outstanding available to trade, be financially profitable and have liquid common stock. The S&P; 500 is one of the most widely cited and followed equity indices.
