The reason why the Brewin Dolphin Commodores' Cup stands as a pinnacle event within the Royal Ocean Racing Club's sizeable calendar was made abundantly evident during its 13th running in late July.

The club's biennial flagship event for three boat teams with Corinthian crews is a supreme test, held on the navigationally complex waters of the Solent and the Channel, and featuring a range of race courses - windward-leewards, round the cans, an overnight offshore race and a race around the Isle of Wight, that on this occasion took place in sun and a 20-25 knot southwesterly. It is also something of a rarity in modern grand prix yachting - an event that lasts a whole week. And to win requires a team effort: All three boats in each team must pull their weight.

Avenarius & Gorm Gondesen's German Ker 46 Shakti was the overall winner of the RORC Channel Race. Tony Lawson was on board his MOD 70 Concise 10 for a blast around the 125 mile course, in just 9 hours 15 mins and 54 Secs and was first boat home. Harm Prins' Volvo 70 Sanya Lan took monohull line honours in just under 12 hours. Shakti's overall win gives the German team just under an 11 point advantage over Tonnerre 4 in IRC Zero for the RORC Season's Points Championship. Tonnerre fell behind early in the race, as the leading boats past through Hurst Narrows and try as the Dutch team might, they could not catch their German rivals.

The Royal Ocean Racing Club's Season's Points Championship continues this weekend with the Channel Race. The 10th race of the series features a flexi-course starting and finishing in The Solent. 41 yachts from four different countries will be taking part, including some of the fastest racing yachts in Europe, as well as a variety of cruiser-racers. Racing in seven IRC Classes and a Class 40 Division, the Channel Race will last approximately 24 hours.

Home Win for Anchor Challenge

The inaugural IRC European Championship was hosted by the Royal Cork Yacht as part of Volvo Cork Week. 45 yachts took part from: England, Guernsey, France, Ireland, Northern Ireland, the Netherlands, Scotland and Wales. IRC Classes raced on a mixture of courses, including a long coastal race. Cork's weather was typical in so much as it provided a massive variation in conditions from day to day. From flat water, light airs and three knots of tide, to ocean swell and 25 knots squalls in the Atlantic Approaches. Yachts equally matched by the IRC Rating system,enjoyed a variety of courses and conditions, testing the all round ability of both crew and yacht.

The third edition of the Royal Ocean Racing Club's RORC Transatlantic Race will start on Saturday 26 November 2016 and the line-up will include MOD70s and Maxi yachts vying for the prestigious IMA Transatlantic Trophy awarded to the line honours monohull winner.

Seven of the ten races scheduled for the inaugural IRC European Championship have now been completed. Yachts equally matched by the IRC rating system, competitors have enjoyed a variety of courses, testing the all round ability of crew and their yachts. On Day Three, all of the IRC Classes were racing in the Atlantic Approaches on either the Windward Leeward or Slalom Course. The key to a top performance today was reacting to the squalls and shifts, emanating from the Old Head of Kinsale, sending a stream of pressure bullets down to Roches Point.

French teams dominated the 2016 RORC Cowes Dinard St Malo Race, with seven classes and the overall win going to French teams. Ironically it was the multihull class, for many years dominated by the French, that Great Britain had its only victory. Tony Lawson's British MOD70 Concise 10, skippered by Ned Collier Wakefield took multihull line honours in an elapsed time of 10 hours 32 minutes 50 seconds and was the winner after time correction.
