Powerboat-mad boys and girls aged between 8 and 16 and from sailing clubs throughout the south west will be racing powerboats in a regional final of the Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship, hosted by the Mount Batten Centre, on Saturday 21 May between 10am and 3pm.

Sam Waites, water sports manager at the Mount Batten Centre, is expecting an exciting day: "This is an excellent annual event which we're proud to be hosting. The youngsters will have a fantastic time racing a course on the Cattewater, and spectators will be able to enjoy all the activity from the balcony here at the centre's Isobar and cafe, or from Queen Anne's Battery."

Andrew Norton, RYA Event Director, said: "It's fantastic to see the competition continuing to thrive, with more than 5,000 children across the UK participating in last year's event.

"The standard continues to rise every year, and we look forward to welcoming more competitors than ever in 2016."

The Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship, sponsored by Honda and Highfield, is a National Championship in which 8 - 16 year old Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) drivers can demonstrate their skills with the goal of winning a Highfield 460 or a Honwave T40 for their club.Now in its fifteenth year, the Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship is Britain's leading programme introducing kids to powerboats and training them to be safe, proficient drivers and excellent boat handlers.RIBs are light, manoeuvrable craft and the boats driven in the Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship can hit speeds of up to 25mph.
