A Gentle Reminder
2016 Doublehanded Team Racing
W. Oxon SC A and Coach Tony Thresher From 2016 NSSA 2x2 Team Racing Champs |
Twenty two teams, from as far away as Cumbria and Derbyshire, gathered at Farmoor Reservoir for the Doublehanded two boat (2x2) Team Racing on March 19th hosted by the Oxford Sail Training Trust. 88 races (and one resail) were completed using the HLS system so everyone got 8 races in almost perfect conditions before the knock out stage.
Match Racing 2015
Ten teams went to Weymouth for the NSSA Match Racing 2015 over the weekend on November 7/8. Unfortunately, the weather did not co-operate. It never quite gusted 50kts (49.28) on Saturday but it was not the weather for going out, even in keelboats. By 2pm the sun had come out and the wind was dropping rapidly but it was never going to get below a mean of 20kts before we ran out of daylight so racing was abandoned for the day.
Instead the teams had a look at the Elliot 6m's to observe their idiosyncrasies, and at 5pm we had a session on Match Racing techniques and tactics, so all will not be lost. The schedule was amended again but we still needed at least 5 flights to get a result. The weather overnight was idyllic. However, by 7am the wind was beginning to rise, so the difficult decision was made to to abandon the event and let everyone get home early.
NSSA Single Handed Team Racing 2015
From 2015 NSSA SH Team Racing Champs |
Cambridgeshire 2 are winners of the 2015 Single Handed Team Racing sailed at Hunts Sailing Club in Cambridgeshire this weekend, 10th and 11th October. They beat Royal Hospital School 2:0 in a closely fought Final.
The team of Michael Carver, Harry Moffatt and Tom Bryant were top of the table after the 160 races comprising 9 rounds and the end of the Swiss League part of the competition. They then had to battle through the semi finals which pitted Cambridgeshire against Plymouth 2 and a young Royal Hospital Team against Kent. Both Cambs and RHS came through with 2:0 wins.
In the Final RHS won the both starts but Cambs managed to conversions at mark 1 in both races. RHS did manage to compress the field on the run but were unable to break the Cambridge stranglehold as shown in the results which saw Cambs finishing 2, 3, 4 and 1, 2, 6.
Terry White MBE
It was with great sadness that we received the news that Terry White MBE had passed away last Sunday, Sept 20th 2015.
Terry was a founding member of the National School Sailing Association, its Treasurer for over 25 years and a Vice President. He was very much the an old school "gentleman" A headmaster in Northampton he was very much involved with School Sailing on Pitsford Reservoir. This was the site of some of the first NSSA Regattas. He made one of the trophies (bowl, made from bog oak) and was responsible for turning the tea urn which Capt Mount-Haes gave him one day (from the back of his Bentley), into the trophy we all know as the Mount Haes Trophy.
Through the 1970's and much of the 80's Terry was Mr NSSA. He would quietly point out how involved the NSSA had been in the early days of the proficiency scheme, with much of the funding for the first National Coach in 1969 coming from the then Department of Education and Science. No doubt, in no small measure, due to his contacts and influence.
He retired to Norfolk in the late 1980's but continued to support the NSSA. He will be sadly missed.
