Bye-bye, YouTube Data API v2

UPDATE: With the launch of video abuse reporting and video search for developer, the Data API v3 supports every feature scheduled to be migrated from the soon-to-be-turned-down Data API v2.

With the recent additions of comments, captions, and RSS push notifications, the Data API v3 supports almost every feature scheduled to be migrated from the soon-to-be-turned-down Data API v2. The only remaining feature to be migrated is video flagging, which will launch in the coming days. The new API brings in many features from the latest version of YouTube, making sure your users are getting the best YouTube experience on any screen.

For a quick memory lane trip, in March 2014, we announced that the Data API v2 would be retired on April 20, 2015, and would be shut down soon thereafter. To help with your migration, we launched the migration guide in September 2014, and have also been giving you regular notices on v3 feature updates.

Retirement plan

If you’re still using the Data API v2, today we’ll start showing a video at the top of your users’ video feeds that will notify them of how they might be affected. Apart from that, your apps will work as usual.

In early May, Data API v2 video calls will start returning only the warning video introduced on April 20. Users will not be able to view other videos on apps that use the v2 API video calls. See youtube.com/devicesupport for affected devices.

By late May, v2 API calls except for comments and captions will receive 410 Gone HTTP responses. You can test your application’s reaction to this response by pointing the application at eol.gdata.youtube.com instead of gdata.youtube.com. While you should migrate your app as soon as possible, these features will work in the Data API v2 until the end of July 2015 to avoid any outages.

Check out the frequently asked questions and migration guide for the most up-to-date instructions on how to update specific features to use the Data API v3. The guide now lists all of the Data API v2 functionality that is being deprecated and won't be offered in the Data API v3. It also includes updated instructions for a few newly migrated features, like comments, captions, and video flagging.

v2 uploads endpoint - 2 seconds to update.

v3 playlistItems endpoind - 2000 seconds to update.

Yeah, this is an upgrade, sure.

I wonder if this will affect the YouTube Downloader websites?

Desktop products like Replay Media Catcher or Replay Video Capture won't be affected, but Google has always hates the YouTube to MP3 sites in particular, as do the studios.

v3 is junk.

No real reliable way to get new uploads from all your subscriptions... in v2 it was "newsubscriptionvideos" method.

There is a 2+ year old bug report for this not being available in v3 and youtube continues to ignore it. http://code.google.com/p/gdata-issues/issues/detail?id=3946

There is indeed a reliable way to get new uploads from all your subscriptions.

Youtube is crazy to depreciate api v2 functionality so soon. They are going to lose a ton of ad traffic. They really expect everyone to spend time and money updating to v3 to get the same functionality? Why should we when they will do the same thing and depreciate v3. What a pain. I am not doing it. RIP all the amazing sites and services that were coded for v2. Youtube is turning its back on you...and itself.

Looks like I'm DONE buying any more "Google backed" devices for my TV. The old YouTube app was literally the only reason I kept my GTV. Now I just have a couple of $200 junk consoles for my TVs that are completely useless because of this. Seriously can't believe this -especially with how much I supported & backed everything GTV by spreading the word to everyone I know. The trust is gone.

Hello,

As Google informed, I'm moving my service from API V2 to API V3.

But I'm having trouble making work the parameters regionCode and relevanceLanguage when I search videos in this new API. Looking for other forums about the matter, I saw that a lot of people can't make them work too. Some people even claim that does not work.

Could somebody help me?

Hi the documentation that youtube api does not support service accounts is not very good
e.g. here: https://developers.google.com/youtube/v3/docs/errors
it says we should receive a 403, instead when i try to list captions using a service account and the php client libraries i get a 404 not found
Also on this page it says NoLinkedYouTubeAccount error should be received: https://developers.google.com/youtube/v3/guides/authentication
Anyhow this should be made clear at the top of the auth/getting started pages and inside the example secitions
SERVICE ACCOUNTS ARE NOT SUPPORTED WITH THE YOU TUBE API
