Membership

  • Total number of members - 106,100 (as at 31/12/2015)

Training

  • The RYA offers more than 100 different theory and practical training courses
  • Approximately 220,000 RYA certificates were issued in 2015   
  • The most popular course in 2015 was RYA Powerboat Level 2, with approximately 26,000 people taking the course
  • There are more than 2,400 recognised RYA Training Centres worldwide, with more than 500 of these outside the UK across almost 50 different countries.

Team15

  • There are 61 active T15 clubs (as at 01/02/2016)
  • 26 clubs took part in 2015 InterClub events, with 255 kids taking part the event throughout the year.
  • 95 Team15 sailors took part in the 2015 Team15 Champions Cup event, including 81 sailors racing on Techno boards, which is the pathway board required for RYA Zone Squads.

OnBoard (OB)

  • As at 31/12/2015 638,346 youngsters had taken part in an OB beginner sailing session for young people
  • Signed up 248 sailing or windsurfing clubs/centres (as at 31/12/2015)
  • 68,884 youngsters now sail/windsurf on a regular basis (as at 31/12/2015)

Honda RYA Youth RIB Championships (HYR)

  • Approximately 5,500 youngsters aged 8-16 competed in the local heats, regional finals and national final of the 2015 Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship 

Racing

The British Sailing Team in the Olympic and Paralympic Classes

  • Podium Squad: 28 sailors (as at 1/1/16)
  • Podium Potential Squad: 43 (as at 1/1/16)

Great Britain is the world’s leading Olympic Classes sailing nation, with more Olympic gold medals won than any other country.

Sailing is also won of Great Britain’s top performing sports, with 23 Olympic and Paralympic Games medals won since 2000.

The British Sailing Team, managed by the RYA, competes across 10 Olympic and three Paralympic Classes.

In 2015 the team amassed 61 medals in major international competitions including World Championships, European Championships, ISAF Sailing World Cup regattas and the Olympic Test Event on the 2016 waters of Rio de Janeiro.

Publications

  • Six new publications, including new editions released in 2015
  • Nine new publications, including new editions scheduled for 2016, including the rules books for the upcoming Racing Rules 2017 - 2020
  • Over 300,000 items including books, eBooks, DVDs, training packs and certificates sold every year
  • There are over 110 RYA titles including books, eBooks, DVDs and charts available from the RYA through the RYA shop. All RYA members can get preferential rates on all items bought directly through the RYA shop
  • Editions are being continually converted to eBooks and released to the RYA Books App. We are looking at completing the digitisation of our range of books by Summer 2016

Sailability

  • There are 204 RYA Sailability sites (as at 19/01/2016)
  • So far some 58,000 disabled people have been able to experience sailing through the RYA Sailability programme (as at 19/01/2016)
  • 17,000 disabled people now sail on a regular basis (as at 19/01/2016)
  • The programme is supported by experienced and dedicated volunteers recruited on a local basis, most of whom have experienced disability awareness training, and are very experienced at working alongside disabled people.

Powerboat Racing

  • In 2015 the RYA Powerboat Racing Department helped over 600 people to race powerboats over the three disciplines of Offshore, Circuit and Jet Sport with several representing Great Britain in International competition
  • 2015 saw RYA Powerboat Racing competitors’ secure two World championship titles and 11 World championship titles. Twenty One National speed records were broken and 41 National Champions were declared.
