Chief Mate (Yachts less than 3000gt)

The Chief Mate (Yachts less than 3000gt) Certificate of Competency is an endorsement of the Officer of the Watch (Yachts less then 3000gt) Certificate of Competency. Once you have completed the following modules, you can then apply to the MCA for the endorsement the Chief Mate (Yachts less than 3000gt) CoC.

Required training for Chief Mate (Yachts less than 3000gt):

Advanced Fire Fighting (STCW A-VI/3)

The course builds on basic fire knowledge, awareness and safety procedures on board. It includes elements of command and control together with the importance of stability and ship integrity. The course is structured around a number of practical searches, rescue techniques, casualty evacuation practices and live fire exercises.

Proficiency in Medical First Aid (STCW A-VI/4-1)

This module provides knowledge of giving first aid safely at sea. The course contains both theoretical and practical elements to build capability and confidence.

Human Element, Leadership and Management (Management Level)

The HELM management level (5 day) course is now required for candidates applying for the Chief Mate (Yachts less than 3000gt) CoC. The course provides Masters and Officers with the knowledge, understanding, skills and tools to effectively manage and lead crew aboard.

Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS)

This course will cover the general principles of operation of an Electronic Chart System and the regulations for the operation and will include time spent on basic software learning the methods of setting up, updating, loading new charts and software.  This will be mandatory training for watch keeping officers on ECDIS fitted ships from 2017.
