Master (Yachts less than 500gt/3000gt)

MCA Master Yachts training consists of several different training modules required to be completed before attending and oral exam to obtain the Master (Yachts less than 500gt/3000gt) Certificate of Competency.

Pre-requisites:

Master (Yachts less than 500gt)

To qualify for issue of the Master (Yachts less than 500gt) CoC a candidate must meet all of the following requirements:

Have a minimum of 12 months Onboard Yacht Service as a Deck Officer, including not less than 120 days Watchkeeping Service, in vessels of 15 metres or over in load line length whilst holding an accepted OOW STCW Reg. II/1 (Yachts less than 3000gt) CoC.
Have fully met the education and training requirements for the issue of the MCA Chief Mate STCW Reg. II/2 (Yachts less than 3000gt) CoC.
Hold all of the pass certificates for the training required to obtain the Master (Yachts less then 500gt) CoC (please find required training modules below).

Master (Yachts less than 3000gt)

To qualify for issue of the Master (Yachts less than 3000gt) CoC a candidate must meet all of the following requirements:

Have a minimum of 24 months Onboard Yacht Service as a Deck Officer, including not less than 240 days Watchkeeping Service whilst holding an accepted OOW STCW Reg. II/1 (Yachts less than 3000gt) CoC. All of this service must be completed in vessels of 15 metres or over in load line length and include 12 months in vessel of 24 metres or over in load line length, of 6 months in vessels of 500gt or more.
Hold a Certificate of Proficiency for Person in Charge of Medical Care on Board Ship (STCW A-VI/4-2)
Hold either a MCA Master STCW Reg. II/2 (Yachts less than 500gt or have passed all written examinations and short courses required for the issue of that certificate. Note: As training module pass certificates are valid for three years, candidates are advised to obtain the MCA Master (Yachts less than 500gt) CoC where circumstances may preclude then from attempting the Master (Yachts less than 3000gt oral examination before the modules expire.
Pass the Master (Yachts less than 3000gt) oral examination

Required training for Master (Yachts less than 500gt/3000gt) modules:

Stability (Master Yachts)

This course covers the basic principles of hydrostatics, hull form and static and initial stability. It also includes the interpretation of curves of statical stability, ships stability data and calculations involving loading and shifting of weights, dry docking, longitudinal stability and basic calculation.

Business and Law (Master Yachts)

This course starts with a basic introduction to civil and criminal law, negligence and duty of care, and follows the structure of the UK Maritime Framework.

Navigation, ARPA and Radar Simulator (Master Yachts)

This course includes passage planning, training in the use of ECDIS, knowledge of IRPCS, competence in search and rescue, a full understanding and expertise in the use of radar and ARPA.

Seamanship and Meteorology (Master Yachts)

This course has five sections: seamanship, navigation, meteorology, MARPOL, and Code of Safe Working Practices.

Proficiency for Persons in Charge of Medical Care on Board Ship (STCW A-VI/4-2)

The module will give the candidate knowledge of medical care at sea together with the confidence that will allow them to deal safely with any situation, and contains both theoretical and practical elements.

Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS)

This course will cover the general principles of operation of an Electronic Chart System and the regulations for the operation. Mandatory training for watch keeping officers on ECDIS fitted ships from 2017.

Human Element, Leadership and Management (Management Level)

The HELM management level (5 day) course provides Masters and Officers with the knowledge, understanding, skills and tools to effectively manage and lead crew aboard.

Celestial Navigation Exam (MCA Approved)

At UKSA we run a 3 day Celestial Navigation Refresher course which includes the MCA Approved exam. This certification is only valid for one year after the date of issue.

Orals Preparation Master (Yachts less than 500gt/3000gt)

This course is highly recommended as an intense final preparation after the completion of all Master 500gt modules and immediately before the final oral exam. The course is designed to explore, educate and test your knowledge and prepares you to answer questions clearly, accurately and comprehensively.
