Record £3.5m in grants to worthy causes in 2015

Last year Seafarers UK awarded an amazing £3,574,465 in grants to charities and organisations involved in providing welfare or maritime youth services or projects in the UK and overseas.

This is far more than the charity has been able to award in one year in recent history, and demonstrates Seafarers UK’s on-going commitment to supporting the maritime community. In 2015 the charity’s funding helped almost 173,000 people in need, and their families, including ex-seafarers and veterans, those currently working at sea as well as those training for a career at sea.

In 2015 Seafarers UK awarded 85 grants, totalling £2,404,465 , including funding 14 organisations new to the charity. The charity also awarded a one-off Centenary project grant of £1,170,000 towards the building of the Seafarers UK Centenary Wing at Mariner’s Park in Wallasey, which is due to open in 2017 – the charity’s Centenary Year. This special grant was only made possible through the charity’s careful use of its reserves, but the need remains to fundraise in order to support the increasing long-term needs and costs of older and future seafarers who are in need.
