BUSA pre event

174 sailors in 97 boats, across four fleets will be heading to Plymouth this weekend (1st-2nd November 2014) for the annual pilgrimage for the first BUCS Sailing Championship of the season. Plymouth University, welcoming sailors from 16 universities is not only supporting the event with lots of volunteers but has also organised some spooky Halloween-themed socials!

The event is being held at Mount Batten Sailing Centre in conjunction with a partnership of Plymouth University and its sports union, Plymouth Youth Sailing, Plymouth Marine Institute and the university’s sailing and powerboat club.

The BUCS Fleet Championships are about individual and team champions, with the first BUCS points of the 2014-15 sailing season being decided this weekend. These will be earned by those universities with three teams (boats) ranking in the top eight combined best scores. This year, the team trophies and BUCS points will be awarded to the top all male teams and top all female teams.

Reigning champion Lorenzo Brando Chiavarini of Plymouth University will be going for his hat trick of BUCS Laser Gold medals. Lorenzo, a member of the British Sailing Team, returns to university this autumn with European and World Under-21 titles in his pocket. Hot on his heels and eager to take the coveted Laser Champion Trophy is Martin Evans (Exeter University) also part of the British Sailing Team, Matt Reid (Southampton Solent University) and Hannah Tilley (Southampton University), who came 2nd, 3rd and 4th at the 2013 Championships.

The growing Firefly Fleet is by far the largest with 51 boats, reflecting the ownership of boats of this Class by university sailing clubs for team racing. There are lots of new faces in this fleet for 2014 with several crews from 2013 stepping into the helming seat. Nick Sutton of Portsmouth University – who came 2nd in 2013 – will be hoping to match or better his performance. Cardiff University are sending a strong firefly team with several top ten finishers from 2014 including Harry Derbyshire, Charlie Cox, and Matt Wallis.

In the handicap fleets we have 2013 2nd placed RS200 crew, Jamie Diamond (Southampton University) making the change to helming. While fellow team mate, Jamie Barker will be looking to score points, having recently won the RS200 Youth Championships and will be sailing with FISU World University Match Racing Women’s Champion sailor, Emily Nagel.

Will Plymouth be able to defend their Men’s and Women’s team titles from 2013?
