GREAT Britain sets time to beat as course is shortened

 The first teams have started to arrive in Qingdao, China, following one of the most challenging legs of the 2013-14 edition of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race: GREAT Britain, Mission Performance and Derry~Londonderry~Doire arrived at the Olympic Sailing Center this morning (10 March) local time.

“We were travelling at high speed in pursuit, it was raining, and visibility was poor. The adrenaline was pumping, you're fearful of making a mistake, a mistake that will incur damage or an unimaginable outcome.”
 As Clipper Round the World Yacht Race crew member Conor O’Byrne, 39, hung onto the foredeck of his yacht, Derry~Londonderry~Doire, fighting to hank on a headsail with wave after wave crashing over him, he was reminded of the high speed car chase he was involved in as a Garda Police Officer through the streets of Dublin shortly before setting off.
 At the time, the yacht was perched on top of an eight to ten metre wave ‘like a slalom skier waiting for the gate to open’.

Bangor’s Liam Glynn Wins ISA Youth Sailor of the Year Award

15 year old Liam Glynn from Bangor, Co. Down was awarded the prestigious Irish sailing award – ISA Youth Sailor of the Year – over the weekend (Saturday 01 March 2014). The award, supported by Quantum Sails Ireland, was presented at the ISA (Irish Sailing Association) annual Awards Ball in the Royal Marine Hotel, Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin before an audience of 270 members and supporters of Irish sailing from all corners of the country.
