Finn Euros set to start in Barcelona

Podium sailors Wright and Cornish spearhead the British Sailing Team challenge

British Podium squad sailors Ed Wright and Ben Cornish will be among a 90-boat fleet contesting the Finn European Championships, which get underway in Barcelona on Monday (7 March).

Sailors from 21 nations have descended on the Mediterranean venue, where a total of six British sailors will be in action across six days of competition.

Wright, who was the third-ranked European sailor in the international fleet at the 2015 edition, will be the highest-ranked British athlete on the startline, with three-time World Champions Giles Scott opting to sit out the event.

Ben Cornish, who earned his call-up to the British Sailing Team Podium squad after finishing as ninth European at last year’s Championship, will look to improve on his 2015 position, while Podium Potential squad sailors Pete McCoy and Hector Simpson will also be out to impress.

British sailors Callum Dixon and Cameron Tweedle will be making their first foray into international Finn competition.

The regatta gets underway on Monday 7 March, with a total of ten races scheduled to determine the final ten sailors who will contest the medal race on Saturday 12 March.

Meanwhile, the Laser and Laser Radial European Championships concluded in Gran Canaria this weekend.

Alison Young finished fifth in the Laser Radial women’s event, while 2015 Laser World Champion Nick Thompson was unable to continue his impressive early event form, finishing as seventh European sailor, ninth overall.
