Can you explain your role within the team? |
I coach the 2.4m, which is the Paralympic single handed class. It’s a really great class and levels the playing field between able bodied and the Para sailors. |
How did you get involved with the team? |
After sailing all my life and coming up through the Youth system in Optimists and 420s, then onto sailing the Olympic Tornado, I have been involved with the team for a long time, both as a sailor and coach. It is a great bunch of characters with one ultimate goal in mind. |
How did you start coaching? |
Initially I started with the Junior and Youth program whilst I was Olympic sailing in the Tornado. It was a great opportunity to help the upcoming sailors. Since the Tornado was dropped from the Games coaching has becoming more professional. It is very rewarding working with driven individuals where you can help to get the best out of them. |
Can you explain what a normal day coaching involves? |
It varies depending on the type of coaching. With performance coaching you have much more time to spend on a one to one basis and have a very clear idea of short term and long term goals. Coaching sessions are then designed with the sailors to improve specific areas. The areas are very diverse which is what makes coaching so interesting. |
You must work with very driven people 24/7 – what’s your approach? |
It’s great working with driven people, especially when there is such a clear goal at the end, I wouldn’t have it any other way. |
If someone has underperformed what’s the best way to get him or her back on track? |
Really varies on the individual. But when you know sailors well, strategies will often be in place to bounce back, that suit the individual. The sailors usually know as well as you, what they have to do. |
If you weren’t a coach what else would you be? |
Something easy like an astronaut. |
Best moment in your career so far? |
I get a kick from sailors results improving, medals are always a great feeling once the job is done. But I think the real key to giving the best coaching support is maintaining focus on the racing, being a constant for your team. Observing what will make a difference on the day and areas that need to be incorporated longer term. |
What’s your greatest fear or phobia? |
The RYA does a great job of raising funds through sponsors and the lottery which has helped the sport immensely. The greatest fear is sailors not being able to carry out what they need to do because of a lack of funds. |
What would you love to do but never have the time or money for it? |
Sail round the World, taking my time to explore. Or bank role an AC camapaign. |
What’s your worst habit? |
Ask Wendy. |
Name 3 things that are always in your shopping trolley? |
Diet Coke, Bike bits, Diet Coke |
What was the last book you read? |
Those in Peril by Wilbur Smith, a right ripping yarn. |
What’s your favourite boat to sail? |
F18 |
