It was a very quiet day for sailing as they raced for six hours on Windermere with light winds which forced the sailors to concentrate for long spells as they tried to capture every little puff of wind while navigating a simple triangular course.
The success on the water was a surprise for at least one of the Bassenthwaite team: Izzy Hunter (13) said "We had no idea we were any good at sailing in light winds!"
Izzy and her team mates Harry Binns, Hazel Newport, Jamie Kerr (all 15) live in Cockermouth and Kewsick and have been sailing for between three and six years. Their overall response was "Really happy. It was brilliant."
Sailing Development Officer Dave Woodhead who organised the event said: "Despite a distinct lack of wind at times the children had a wonderful time competing against and socialsing with children from other OnBoard clubs. ""The change over of crews from a kayak to their boat in the middle of the lake was a new innovation this year that required a whole new skill set! The children loved it."
Twenty five youngsters took part in relay teams from Derwentwater Marina, Windermere Outdoor Activity Centre,Glenridding Sailing Centre, Royal Windermere Yacht Club and Bassenthwaite Sailing Club.
All of them are part of the RYA's OnBoard programme that introduces youngsters to the sport of sailing and can put them on a pathway that may take them to international competition.
The two newcomers to the event this year did well, Royal Windermere were second and Glenridding joint third
