Musto Performance Skiff Class Association News

At the 2006 ISAF Annual Conference in Finland last November, the Musto Performance Skiff was granted ISAF Recognized Class status. Originating from the ISAF Single-Hander Evaluation Event in 2000, the boat has been designed and developed to produce an elegant yet simple dinghy with blistering performance that is highly enjoyable to sail.

As with any true skiff the deck layout is extremely simple leaving the sailor free to focus on sailing the boat. The layout means that all the controls including the spinnaker hoist and recovery work effortlessly and do not get tangled up with complex systems, just focus on sailing the boat!

The Musto Performance Skiff has evolved and been tested using the considerable experience of the development team. From the concept in 1999 by German designer Dr. Joachim HARPPRECHT, a lifetime single-handed trapeze dinghy sailor, through the manufacture of production prototypes to the final production and manufacture using the best material and techniques available.

Wide Spread

With the backing of Musto Ltd and with strong class rules protecting the one design principle the class are enjoying exciting racing in growing fleets worldwide. With strong class-run training camps, the boat is also reaching a wider audience, with both men and women competing together in the class.

The Musto Performance Skiff was presented at the ISAF single-handed trials in March 2000 for consideration for a future Olympic Class. There the skiff demonstrated its speed and left wide smiles on the faces of the evaluation sailors.

From the outset the class has aimed at attaining ISAF recognition to give it worldwide credibility, and was awarded ISAF Recognized status at the November 2006 ISAF Annual Conference.

Looking Ahead

Built and marketed by a partnership of Victor Boats and Ovington Boats, and currently sailed in 16 countries worldwide there is now an established exciting new class that is ISAF's only single-handed monohull class with an asymmetric spinnaker . The boat clocks speeds of over 20 knots and the hull with all deck fittings weigh only 55 kg for a length of 4.55m (bare hull weight 40 kg).

The first World Championships will be held at Fraglia vela Malcesine on Lake Garda, Italy from 18-23 June, where the class is expecting some spectacular racing over windward-leeward courses. However, the class prides itself on being innovative, and will be considering new race formats in 2007 to make it even more spectator and visually interesting.
