VinaCapital Hong Kong To Vietnam Race 2006
Nha Trang, Vietnam

At 05:00 this morning Hong Kong Time, it became apparent that Skandia's 2004 record of 42 hours, 45 minutes and 41 seconds will stand for another two years. With the breeze softening off Da Nang, multihull Atmosphere reached the finish line at Nha Trang at 11:40, with Island Fling taking monohull line honours at 12:16.

Hi Fi and Siren are also making good progress towards the finish line in Nha Trang and will be looking to make an impact on the results when handicaps have been applied.

The RHKYC Race Team in Nha Trang have been greatly assisted by the Pole Star/SkyWave tracking systems installed on all the boats, not only in anticipating the finish of the leading boats but also in keeping and eye on the retirees. Quest is currently making her way back to Hong Kong for reasons unspecified and Ffree Fire 52 is continuing to Nha Trang with rig problems, albeit at a slower pace than Sam CHAN (HKG) would have liked. The only fly in the ointment is Mandrake, whose last position was picked up at 16:00 on Thursday and who could be a contender for the Division A title on corrected time.

In Premier cruising, HSBC Strewth, Hocux Pocux 2 and Shahtoosh are all still close together with HSBC Strewth out in front by 20 nm. In Division B Barnstormer is now the sole representative, Polar Star III having confirmed their retirement at the 08:00 radio position report due to a problem with their boom. T C LEUNG (HKG) and his crew are now making their way to the nearest port of Sanya on Hainan Island.

As promised by Hong Kong Observatory at the pre-race Skippers' Briefing, the wind is building from the north and the back markers should benefit from this over the next two days - for now, everyone still racing is expected to make prizegiving on Sunday night in Nha Trang.
