Down the coast, however, it was another frustrating afternoon of light air on Biscayne Bay for competitors in the 49er, Tornado and Yngling classes.

Meg GAILLARD continues to dominate the 14-boat Europe fleet where 12 races have been completed in the series, allowing competitors to count two drops in their overall scoring. Gaillard won both races on Friday, and carries a low score of 10 points, as well as a 13-point lead over Krysia POHL who finished third in both of the day's racing. After placing second in both races today, Christin FELDMAN carries 26 points for third overall.

Kevin HALL finished 1-4 in today's two races and continues his rule over the 23-boat Finn class, which also has knocked off 12 of their planned 16-races. After counting two throwouts, Hall carries 18 points and a 13-point cushion for his lead position in the overall standings. Geoff EWENSON moved back up to second overall after placing second in all three races on Thursday, and he remains there after finishes of 6-3 today. Bryan BOYD won the final race of the day and, with 37 points, remains third overall.

With 11 races so far in the series, the six Yngling teams have not gotten to count a second discard in their scoring. Once that milestone is factored, the point spread will narrow, setting the stage for a nail-biting finale. For the second consecutive day, Carol CRONIN, Liz FILTER and Nancy HABERLAND have led the overall standings. They placed second in yesterday's race and now carry a low score of 23 points. Posting a third-place finish also kept Sally Barkow Carrie Howe and Debbie CAPOZZI in the mix. They stand second overall on 27 points. Betsy ALISON with crew Lee ICYDA and Suzy LEECH continue to move back up the standings. With their win of today's lone race, they are positioned third overall with 28 points for a slim one-point lead over Hannah SWETT with Joan TOUCHETTE and Melissa PURDY. A second race was abandoned when, while the Ynglings were on their second weather leg, the breeze disappeared leaving behind a flat calm Biscayne Bay.

With their later start time, the Tornado sailors racing from Miami Yacht Club also fell victim to the disappearing breeze. They will push back for an earlier start tomorrow in an attempt to get back on the schedule of 16-planned races. Sailing races nine and 10 on Thursday, Lars GUCK and Jonathan FARRAR finished 1-2 and stand second overall with 17 points. They are chipping away at the lead held by two-time Olympians John LOVELL and Charlie OGLETREE who finished 3-1 and hold first with 12 points.

In the 49er class, Tim WADLOW and Pete SPAULDING came back from an OCS in the first race of the day to post finishes of 4-1 in the 17th and 18th races of the series. Earning 12 points for the alphabet score that they were able to then discard, Wadlow and Spaulding continue to lead the series. Significantly, they have not lost any ground on the 12-point spread between themselves and Dalton BERGAN and Zack MAXAM who finished 4-2-3 in today racing. Just one point out of second, Andy Mack (White Salmon, Wash.) and Adam Lowry bracketed their win in the second race with a fourth and a third for 45 points in the overall scoring. The 49er fleet is the only one with 24 races planned.

Racing continues today and wraps up tomorrow, when only the winner in each event will have secured a place on the USA's 2004 Olympic Team. For results as they become available click on the event website at the address below.
