International A-Class World Championship
New Plymouth

Australian Glen ASHBY has won the International A-Catamaran World Championship, hosted in New Plymouth, New Zealand over the last seven days. He also took the New Zealand National Championship prior to the Worlds.
Only one race was held on the final day yesterday, and in a 14-16 knot breeze it took two general recalls and a black flag start before the fleet finally got away with a clean start. Huub LAMBRIEX (NED) was the early leader at the first mark, followed by Dave BREWER (AUS).

Glenn ASHBY (AUS) battled through from a difficult start to eventually lead the race but the real gains were made by Steve BREWIN (AUS), who managed to battle from 20 position early in the race to eventually finish fourth and take third in the championship.

The dominant form of the Australian contingent, especially the new world champion Glenn ASHBY is a credit to the development of the A-class in the country. Ashby won with a scoreline that included no less than five first place finishes.

Next year's World Championship is in Sanguinet, near Bordeax on the Atlantic coast of France.
