African Optimist Championship 2005
Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania

The first day of the African Optimist Championships at the Dar es Salaam Yacht club in Tanzania got underway yesterday, with two yellow flags and several 360's.
The sailors got the signal to get on the water at 0930 with the first race planned to start at 1100, the committee decided to wait for an expected wind shift that caused a small delay. At midday it finally arrived, the wind shifting by 90 degrees to the excitement of everyone.

The warning signal was launched and the Opis were ready for action.

Three races were sailed yesterday in beautiful weather, nice strong wind and by the end of the day quite a choppy sea. The front runners varied in each race and it's great to see competition at all levels of the fleet (and between the two genders). The race committee also had a busy day with numerous recalls and restarts.

The jury did not sit still either with two sailors receiving a yellow flag for breaking rule 42.

However it was good to see that all penalties were taken and that sportsmanship ruled over the water with many 360s being undertaken with respect to the rules.
