Australian Youth Championship
Lake Macquarie, New South Wales, Australia

The Australian Youth Championship began today at Belmont 16ft Sailing Club, with over 135 entries including sailors from all around Australia, and 15 International entries from Singapore and New Zealand.

An Invitation Race was held this afternoon in a steady sea breeze which allowed competitors to stretch their legs and check out the opposition. Following that was the Opening Ceremony and Media Conference.

The classes involved in the event include Lasers, Laser Radials (girls and boys), 420s (girls, boys, mixed), 29ers (boys, mixed), Hobies (open) and Mistrals (girls and boys). The fleets are split onto two course areas which are set in Belmont Bay.

Being one of the Selection Events for the Australian Youth Team, who will go on to represent Australia at the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship in Pusan, South Korea, 14-23 July 2005, sailors will no doubt be focussed and well prepared for the first two races which begin at 1330 tomorrow.
