Expert Olympic Garda 2005
Lake Garda, Italy

The final day of the ISAF Grade 2 Expert Olympic Garda saw a storm say goodbye the event for another year. The race committee needed to get racing underway before 15:00 for the final race to count but the Ora wind did not blow and the standings from the penultimate day decided the medals.

Principal Race Officer Giorgio LAURO called time on the event and the results from eleven races (13 for the 49er) confirmed the final positions. Larissa NEVIEROV (ITA) delighted home fans by winning the Laser Radial class ahead of ISAF World Sailing Rankings number one Keamia RASA (CAN). In the Laser class Tom SLINGSBY (AUS) won his first ever graded event, beating Olympic bronze medallist Vasilij ZBOGAR (SLO) into second place.

It was more good news for the Italians in the 49er. Pietro and Gianfranco SIBELLO took an emphatic victory, winning ten of the thirteen races. In the men's 470, it was an Italy one-two with 2003 ISAF World Champion Gabrio ZANDONA with new crew Francesco DELLA TORRE taking the top spot. In the women's fleet it was Austria all the way with Sylvia VOGL and Carolina FLATSCHER taking the bullet in all but two of the eleven races.

Rafael TRUJILLO (ESP) showed everyone why he has an Olympic medal by winning the Finn class emphatically from Emilios PAPATHANASIOU (GRE) and in the Tornado fleet the Russian team of Andrey KIRILYUK and Valery USHKOV didn't give anyone else a look in winning all eleven races. Sally BARKOW, Carrie HOWE and Debbie CAPOZZI (USA) but in a similarly great performance to take the top spot in the Yngling ahead of Olympic medallists Ruslana TARAN, Ganna KALININA and Svitlana (UKR).
