Jean Luc VAN DEN HEEDE (FRA) crossed the finish line south of the Isle of Wight, Great Britain 7 days, 8 hours and 47 minutes after he left to sail Round Britain and Ireland. VAN DEN HEEDE onboard Adrien took over four days off the single-handed record set by Michael KLEINJANS (BEL) last year, subject to ratification by the World Sailing Speed Record Council (WSSRC).
The 26 metre aluminum
Adrien crossed the finish line this morning at 0852 hours, meaning VAN DEN HEEDE covered the 1,787nm 4 days, 3 hours and 39 minutes faster than
Roaring Forty, the current record holder. Last May-June KLEINJANS skippered
Roaring Forty round Britain and Ireland at an average speed of 6.47 knots taking 11 days, 12 hours, 26 minutes and 48 seconds to cover the 1,787 miles.
Despite smashing this time VAN DEN HEEDE and Adrien narrowly missed out on the Round Britain and Ireland crewed monohull record of Solune, which, set in May 2004, stands at 7 days, 4 hours and 46 minutes.
VAN DEN HEEDE and Adrien make a very successful partnership. They already hold the Round the World, non stop, single-handed, westbound record, set a little over a year ago and the Cowes to Dinard, monohull, single-handed record, which they set last November.
