24 Monohull Record

WSSRC Record

The World Sailing Speed Record Council (WSSRC) have ratified the 24 hour distance monohull record set by MoviStar. The VO 70 increased the record by five miles to 530.19 nm.

The Spanish entry for the Volvo Ocean Race 2005-2006 set the record for the longest distance sailed by a monohull in 24 hours on the 4-5 April, four days after the boat left Wellington, New Zealand on her way to Cape Horn, Chile. Skippered by Bouwe BEKKING (NED), MoviStar covered 530.19nm in 24 hours at an average speed of 22.09 knots.

The previous record was held by Robert MILLER (GBR) on Maricha IV, who covered 525.7 nm at an average speed of 21.9 knots.

Part of BEKKING's crew is Iker MARTÍNEZ, the Spanish 49er gold medallist in Athens 2004. He said, 'The boat literally flew! It's hard to describe the sensation as it cuts through the waves at this speed'.

Lithuania's Juozas Bernotas came out on top in the Men's RS:X whilst Russia's Stefania Elfutina was triumphant in the Women's RS:X. Both sailors claim the first Abu Dhabi ISAF Sailing World Cup Final spots whilst Jock Calvert (AUS) and Joanna Sterling (AUS) picked up the Oceanic spots for the Emirati finale.

A tight group of five young Papua New Guinean (PNG) Laser sailors are stepping up their 2015 Pacific Games competition program using this week's ISAF Sailing World Cup Melbourne. PNG is one of 33 countries represented at the important Oceanic event, the largest Olympic sailing regatta in the southern hemisphere.
