Due to light wind conditions the Practice Race was abandoned on Sunday but on Monday, 130 teams headed to the start line outside of Portland Harbour. With the wind strengthening and conditions deteriorating, sailors began to struggle in the testing conditions so the Race Officer had no alternative but to abandon the race when the young British team of Tom Phipps and Richard Glover were in the lead and whose hard work was to no avail.

On Tuesday teams had to sit it out ashore as the strong wind conditions prevented any racing taking place.

On day 3 with no races to count so far, the Race Officer was under pressure to get some races sailed and scheduled three races back to back. The day started with light, shifting conditions, so racing was held inside Portland Harbour due to the strong wind forecast. This made for close racing within the confines of the harbour and conditions became testing as the wind increased.
The first race of the day saw two false starts and with the Black Flag flying for the third starting sequence, saw the demise of the current World Champions, French team Emmanuel Dode and Frédéric Moreau who were over the line and were disqualified. They had to sit it out on the side lines as the rest of the fleet experienced some excellent racing in the light, shifting conditions. With the current World Champions out of contention, the door was left open for the British team of David and Louise Roberts who claimed the first bullet of the championship, Thierry and Christine Wibaux from France came in second and British team, former World Champions, Dan Norman and Mel Rogers third.

With the wind strength increasing French team, Emanuel Dode and Fred Moreau were back in action, showing their world championship winning form to take fist place in race two. The young British Team of Tom Phipps and Richard Glover showed determination and fought back from their disappointment on Monday to take second place. David Lloyd and Joanna Jones-Pierce stormed in to third place. Lloyd, who has sailed at every World Championships - 11 in total including this one, is surely due for a win and will be a serious contender for the title.

Tom Phipps and Richard Glover showed their consistency in strong winds and their determination to succeed by taking first place in the final race of the day just ahead of the French team of Emmanuel Dode and Fred Moreau second and British team, Dan Norman and Mel Rogers third

As the wind steadily increased and with deteriorating visibility, conditions proved difficult for the fleet with many boats retiring.
