James Peters and Fynn Sterritt

Golden end to 2015 EUROSAF series in La Rochelle

49er and RS:X victories round off the 2015 EUROSAF Champions Cup series in France

The French Olympic Sailing Week delivered two gold, one silver and one bronze medal for British sailors, as the 2015 EUROSAF Champions Sailing Cup series drew to a close today (Saturday 10 October) in La Rochelle.

The British Sailing Team’s Podium Potential squad pairing James Peters-Fynn Sterritt took gold over Dylan Fletcher-Alain Sign in the 49er event to see the perfect warm-up to their World Championship next month, while British Youth Sailing Team windsurfer Dan Wilson also took victory in the RS:X 8.5 event with Andrew Brown joining him on the podium with bronze.

The five day regatta brought a mix of conditions, with a strong wind start to the event making way for a light wind conclusion to test the sailors on Saturday’s medal race day.

Peters and Sterritt started the day outside of the podium spots, but a second place in the final double-points medal races was enough to see them overhaul their teammates Dylan Fletcher-Alain Sign by three points in the overall standings, with the latter having to settle for silver.

The RS:X 8.5 event saw a combined fleet of youth boys and senior women racing in La Rochelle. RYA Youth National Champion Dan Wilson took a ten point lead into his medal race and managed to strengthen his grip on the gold thanks to a second place in the finale. His British Youth Sailing Team stablemate Andrew Brown took bronze with silver going to American Olympic campaigner Farrah Hall.

Imogen Sills was the fourth-placed female sailor in the 8.5 fleet, sixth overall, with brother Sam finishing just outside of the medals in fourth in the RS:X 9.5 event.

Jack Wetherell just missed out on the podium spots as well in the Laser event – finished fourth with brother Henry tenth overall, while Ellie Cumpsty was 28th in the Laser Radial.
