Fresh from his exploration into double-handed sailing with Kelvin Rawlings, RORC member Stuart Childerley provides an insight of how their campaign evolvled to enable them to finish the top double-handed crew and 4th overall in this year's Rolex Fastnet Race sailing on the J105 Jester.

A highly varied fleet with fascinating competitors will set off on 28th November from Lanzarote - the most eastern island in the Canary Islands chain - bound for the island of Grenada in the Caribbean in the RORC Transatlantic Race organised by The Royal Ocean Racing Club in association with The International Maxi Association.
Two MOD 70s will be locking horns in the 2015 RORC Transatlantic Race, aiming for line honours and victory in a highly competitive, high-speed duel: Lloyd Thornburg's Phaedo³ and Tony Lawson's Concise 10, skippered by Ned Collier Wakefield are capable of a top speed in excess of 40 knots and an average 25 knots for the race. Two of the world's fastest multihulls could complete the 3000 nautical mile course in just five days.

The two MOD 70s have raced each other twice. Concise 10 got the better of Phaedo³ in the Artemis Challenge, around the Isle of Wight Race but Phaedo³ squared the match, beating Concise 10 in the Rolex Fastnet Race. The RORC Transatlantic Race will be the first transoceanic race between two fully crewed MOD 70s for over three years and it is highly likely that the race will be incredibly close. In the last fully crewed Transatlantic Race featuring MOD 70s, three teams finished within two hours of each other.

Organised by the Royal Southampton YC, in conjunction with the Royal Ocean Racing Club, the second edition of the IRC Double Handed National Championship took place in the Solent, last weekend. 37 teams took part racing in three IRC Classes, lack of wind on the Saturday was the undoing of the passage race but two excellent races were held on the first day in the Central Solent.

Race Director Robert Lamb, sets the scene for the championship. "With high pressure dominating the south coast of England racing was delayed on Friday until a south westerly settled in after 4pm. Two races were then run: a laid marks 'sausage/triangle' followed by a 'round the cans' race. Wind eventually strengthened to 10-12 knots to provide good racing. Saturday was disappointing with not enough wind to run the scheduled three hour passage race. So two races only were completed for the championship. All competitors were invited to the RORC Cowes Clubhouse for supper, which had a terrific atmosphere."

Organised by the Royal Southampton YC, in conjunction with the Royal Ocean Racing Club. The second edition of the IRC Double Handed National Championship will take place in the Solent, this weekend. A huge variety of keelboats have entered with about 40 teams taking part. Three races are scheduled with no discard. The variety of courses are designed to test all the elements of Double Handed racing with a laid marks course, a round the cans race and a long passage race.

Last year's IRC Class 1winner, Paul Griffiths' J/109 Jagerbomb will be defending their title and Paul will be once again be sailing with his son Mark. Jagerbomb has been competing in the Two Handed class for this year's RORC Season's Points Championship, including the Rolex Fastnet Race.

The exciting addition of two MOD 70s in the second running of the RORC Transatlantic Race has led to the decision to move the start location to Puerto Calero's sister facility Marina Lanzarote which is conveniently located in the island's capital Arrecife. The brand new Marina Lanzarote will host the start of the 2015 RORC Transatlantic Race on Saturday 28 November.

The two MOD 70's, Lloyd Thornburg's Phaedo³ and Tony Lawson's Concise 10 will use the RORC Transatlantic Race to continue a rivalry they started during the Rolex Fastnet Race this summer and will continue into the RORC Caribbean 600 in February 2016.

Marina Lanzarote is situated in a natural harbour in front of the city of Arrecife and whilst not yet a year old, has already hosted the prestigious Panerai Transat Classique and is due to welcome the Mini Transat fleet early this autumn. On a stretch of coast punctuated by 17th century forts, the site is historically attractive and a popular local venue due to the eclectic choice of restaurants and bars. The contrasting clean and modern design includes an ample shipyard with an 820-tonne travel hoist.

The penultimate race of the RORC Season's Points championship produced a dramatic finale to the club's domestic season. Whilst the overall and class winners will not be finalised until after next month's Rolex Middle Sea Race, the Cherbourg race all but sealed victory for the seven classes racing under IRC for the season. Géry Trentesaux's JPK 10.80, Courrier Du Leon is the overall leader with just one race to go.

Piet Vroon's Ker 53, Tonnerre 4 scored a hatrick of victories in the Cherbourg Race, taking just 6 hours 18 minutes and 20 seconds to complete the 75 nautical mile course, Tonnerre 4 took Line Honours, the overall win under IRC and IRC Zero. The flying Dutchman was over the moon about the victory, which confirmed Tonnerre 4 as the class winner for IRC Zero for the championship.

After a record breaking Rolex Fastnet Race, the Royal Ocean Racing Club's 2015 RORC Season's Point Championship continues this weekend with the ever popular Cherbourg Race. 60 yachts have entered, and for nearly all of them, this will be the last race of the championship. Although the Rolex Middle Sea Race is actually the final race. the overall and class winners of the 2015 RORC Season's Point Championship are likely to be decided this weekend.

Weather forecasts are predicting a light to medium northerly gradient wind, which should prove ideal conditions for Mikey Ferguson's IMOCA 60, Artemis Ocean Racing to take Line Honours, however, Piet Vroon's Ker 51, Tonnerre 4 could also be the first yacht to reach Cherbourg.

Following their magnificent victory in the Rolex Fastnet Race, Géry Trentesaux's JPK 10.80 Courrier Du Leon, is the overall leader for the RORC Season's Point Championship but victory for the season is still not decided. Louis-Marie Dussere's JPK 10.10, Raging Bee, which is being campaigned Two Handed, is less than 33 points behind Courrier Du Leon, and capable of winning the overall prize.

For the RORC Season's Points Championship, class results are decided by the yachts top five races for the season. The Cherbourg Race represents the last chance for many to improve their points total to claim the podium positions for the class; two classes winners are very much in the balance.
