A Step Towards the Second Trilogy

The first trilogy of the Barcelona World Race has just ended, the third edition completed only days ago. Over the first ten years the race has fostered the growth of oceanic racing whilst making a comprehensive, positive cultural and social impact through the educational and scientific programmes, which are integral to the two-handed race around the world.  

Now the second trilogy of the race is set in motion. The organisers of the Barcelona World Race, the FNOB, and the IMOCA - the International Monohull Open Class Association, have signed an agreement for the Barcelona World Race to continue as a key event on the ocean racing calendar for at least three more editions, consolidating the Catalonian capital city for twelve more years as a reference centre in this sport.

Slow and Slower

Spirit of Hungary are slow in the Alboran Sea, averaging around 3kts overnight and making just 1kt at dawn. And so the finish time of Nandor Fa and Conrad Colman is still difficult to predict. They have very, very light winds and on the early report were still 437 miles from the finish line, 80 miles or so from Cabo de Gata.

Jean-Pierre Dick has won both editions of the Barcelona World Race so far. But the French skipper will not race this time to defend his title. The skipper from Nice is working on his new IMOCA 60 Saint-Michel-Virbac, a Verdier-VPLP design which he is having built for the next Vendée Globe. The boat will be launched at the end of the spring 2015 but until then the skipper is high and dry, boat-less. Bruno Garcia is a Barcelona based cardiologist who has always liked to make his own heart beat just a little faster. For many years he has been at the forefront of Spain's solo and short handed ocean racing movement, one of the pioneers who has inspired some of the younger Spanish ocean racers. And when he is not ocean racing, working as an interventionist cardiologist he is something of an extreme skier. The other love always close to his heart is his family. He also loves to spend time with them. 

Food and nutrition: much more than a diet

Eating well during a double-handed round the world regatta is one of the pillars of racing success. The foods must not only cover the skippers' dietary needs, but also form the basis of vast logistical operation, involving water, energy and boat performance. Race Direction monitor the Barcelona World Race crews around the clock, 24 hours a day, tracking the boats’ progress virtually minute by minute, mile by mile around the world, to – hopefully – Barcelona. They keep the various MRCCs (maritime rescue and surveillance organisations) updated throughout the race. And in times of crisis they are the first point of contact for the skippers and the teams, and thereafter coordinate any actions required.
