As managers of the UK’s seabed out to the 12 nautical mile limit, we play a unique role in the UK’s energy supply and infrastructure by working in partnership with a wide range of organisations. Our interests include wind, wave and tidal power, carbon capture and storage, gas storage, marine aggregates and minerals, cables and pipelines.

Our Portfolio

Offshore wind energy

As managers of the seabed out to the 12 nautical mile limit, we play a major role in the development of the offshore wind energy industry in the UK.

Marine aggregates

Although our mineral interests focus mainly on the extraction of marine aggregates, we do also have interests in salt and, more significantly, potash.

Cables and pipelines

Cables and pipelines is an established part of our business. Our attention focuses on how we can support industry and maintain the UK’s position as a key landing point for submarine telecoms.

Wave and tidal

We are committed to working with industry and stakeholders to successfully exploit the UK's significant wave and tidal energy resources.

Minerals potash

We hold the rights for deposits of potash which lie beneath the UK seabed, which are mined by our tenants from the mainland.

Carbon capture and storage

We are working with developers to identify how carbon storage beneath the seabed can help the UK meet its targets on carbon emissions.

Natural gas storage

Under the 2008 Energy Act we hold the rights for gas storage within the Gas Importation and Storage Zone (GISZ), which extends out to the continental shelf.

Onshore renewables

Our energy programmes also include onshore projects which are part of our Rural portfolio.
